***OKIES in the BYC III ***

My hen that has the fully developed spur on one leg hatched 2 babies three days ago out of a nest full of eggs, I knew that a couple of fresh eggs had been laid in the same nest so I gathered
I'm thinking I might have some more broody hens now I think Ms Thang started something when she hatched out her two little ones, I had three hens setting on nests this evening when I gathered eggs and they tried to eat my hand off to the elbow, I guess I'll select some eggs to get under them and hope they don't play musical nest boxes, I was proud of Ms Thang she stayed with her nest of eggs and didn't get confused about which nest was hers like the last two did, those killed a few dozen eggs before I moved them to separate cages,
I got a little rain here mostly it missed me but cooled it off outside will be good sleeping weather tonight :) I hope everyone else got the water we didn't, see everyone later...
Hubby said to paint their names on their nest box.

Quote: Glad you took care of the snake. Sorry you lost your chickens in the process. I had one get a guinea of mine that was that big one time. Black snakes sometimes travel in pairs too so keep watch for another one.
Oh no! I have the shovel and the limb loppers at the ready and have been checking the houses more often. Set the minnow trap with ceramic eggs that have been in the hen nests to get the right "Ode de cologne" smell on them.
A pair of young Brazilian games i raised this year.
Nice looking birds Matt!

I bet! Ecoli is nothing to mess around with! I am struggling with just to get the turkey caught and in the cage. They do NOT like being handled.

When I had turkeys, a big towel held up like a wall and then work turkey to the corner and lay the towel over the bird and roll it in the towel worked.

Sorry Robin, thats a roo for sure!

Hey Joe are you going to have chicks at the meetup this month?

Boy I am envious of all the garden stuff you all are getting! With our dry spring and late frost everything is late here. My tomatoes are just starting to bloom. Will get our first squash in a couple of days. Picked a mess of green peas today.

Caught the biggest, uglyest oposumm last night. He was mangey, huge and his head was shaped like a dog! I'm surprised I haven't been looseing lots of stuff to him.
Well my wife got an offer of a job today. Just has to agree and she starts next week. Only problem is its about two hours away. She will have to stay over there ,I really don't want her on the roads that much. Not for sure how we will work it out but will have to wait a while qand make sure its something she wants to stay with before we try and either sell out or rent and move over there. Right now we are just excited she has a job again!

Barely over a week till the meetup. Sure hope Everything works as planned so I get to go!

dang! another roo! galahad sure runs long on boys! and this guy is a sweetheart! wonder if galahad would put up with him...

wayne, where is the job??? this way or east?

So what is the definition of a good rooster. One that behaves nice with the ladies? I have being reading and found someone say that any rooster is not good enough. I has to be a "good" rooster to keep the ladies in line.

A good rooster will not let his ladies fight, I have seen them get between two hens that were in a very severe fight and then dole out punishment once the fight was stopped. They will also find treats and goodies for the hens and chicks and will stand back until they walk away. A very good rooster will even set the nest while a hen is out doing their daily duties and above all. A good rooster will defend his flock to the death against all comers, no matter how large or how many.

Thanks for the responses everybody. What's interesting is the EE is inside still and the Turkeys are the only ones showing symptoms outside. I looked up blackhead and the symptoms for it don't seem to line up. They are eating and acting just fine and their stools are normal too. This appears to be all in the chest and head. What Mitzi said is exactly the disease I was suspecting, that's why I was looking for the LS-50, so I guess it's either that or denegard. Everything I read said Tylan would likely end up with immediate resurgance as well. How on earth do you hold a turkey well enough to inject it??? I would rather have something I can put in the water.

Mitzi - I was kinda winging the dose on the duramyacin :p once I really started looking I was giving more than a double dose, that's probably why it was working! :p

Years ago we were brooding some poults in the house and I got up one morning and their heads were swollen so badly that you couldn't even tell that they had eyes.

Rushed down to the local elevator and grabbed what I thought was a packet of Terramycin and when I got home I found that it was LS-50 so I decided to give it a try. Got the firts bit in them with a crop tube and within 24 hours the swelling was down far enough so that they could see. In three days you couldn't tell that there was anything wrong with them at all. I was then and still am a firm believer of LS-50 but I think the Denagard has it beat but I haven't had the oppurtunity to try it out. The doseages on the bottle for LS-50 is for a preventative, I usually use 1 tablespoon in one gallon of water for a full 7 days, changing water daily of course.

Ksane while every one is talking about Roos you should show off your beautiful roo he is somthing to brag about .

ok guys...is lucky a boy or girl???
i keep yoyoing on it... this is the one from the crushed egg awhile back

What breed is it? And what age? That'd make a big difference. I've seen combs like that on lots of girls of different breeds but not younger than 4-5 months.
Hens fight, too? lol I've seen a peck to the head when a newbie gets introduced but that's the extent of it. You must have some hens with attitude :)

Can I get SOMEONE to take these 6 Guineas?? Just look at that face!
I'm coming to NEOCS after all and can bring them. Anybody???

i am a firm believer in denagard, the big problem to keep in mind is add sugar or honey to the drinking water since it is bitter, and they won't drink it plain- but it is amazing stuff, and well worth the cost
Haha! They've seen enough pictures of my Faverolles boy to last them a long time lol I'm sure they want to tell me just to STOP with his pictures :)
Here's a picture of his son from today though, he's 10 wks old.

mitzi, your fav boy is beautiful! mine are still at the straggly stage-
Lucky is an EE mix, hatched about the first week of march- very sweet guy, if he is a he, but he doesn't hold the tail high like the other roos at his age

bring the keets, i am sure someone will want them! cute little buggers- i can actually go in the coop with mama guinea and sit, if i don't make sudden moves, and they are starting wing practice- but this is one mama you don't want to argue with!
