***OKIES in the BYC III ***

anyone know if faverolles are heat tolerant? its ugly hot out there....
The Bantams are a lot more heat tolerant than the LF's. I think MacGuyver's friend has LF's. Do they have shade? Mine are outside in a 10x10 pen under shade and doing fine, gave them fresh water a little while ago and they weren't even panting. My LF's also have plenty of shade, they pant when it's this hot but no more so than my LF Cochins. Assuming they're in shade you could set up a fan with a mister in front of it. Joe made a great mister hose by cutting little holes in a regular hose. You could run the hose on the ground in front of the fan and only put little holes in the section that's directly in front of the fan. There's no reason to bring them inside (assuming there's shade where they're at). Lack of air flow is what seems to make them most miserable.

Fixin some soup for supper, wish I could go to Blanchard, this heat is hard on my , with two heat exhaustions in my past three years, i think the AC is my friend for a while!!! Lynn

the larger the bird the more the heat will bother them shade fabric is a life saver for the birds and when it gets realy hot i turn the misster hoses on between the fabric and misster hose it drops the temp allmost 10/15 degre it is a cheep but verry afective way to keep the birds cool in this heat here is another pic of my A frames with shade and misster hose running

My friend does have the large fowl faverolles. My Dominiques have been doing fine with shade and plenty of water.

ok, thanks, since these are bantams, i guess i'll set up an indoor cage - just finished one for boaz and ginger- apparently boaz had heat stroke, nursed him through yesterday, and took some of those plastic shelves, covered the sides with netting- need to get a pic, i could do the same with the favs.... sigh
wonder if an ice jug would work?
I've heard people have good luck with ice jugs.

When we had the LF Cochin and Wyandotte the heat was always a problem, misters can be a real lifesaver.. a few dollars at an atwoods, lumber store, walmart etc. is money well spent. I pften plucked the underside and legs of the birds to help as well. Airflow is a big key but some losses can be expected to heavily feathered and loose feathered birds when tepms cross 100 for several days.
Add some cayene pepper or something similar to the water this will encourage them to drink more to prevent dehydration.

5AcreFarm, I love that big building!!
Here's the 4x8 x 6' tall coop my daughter and I framed the other day. Then today I put the pickets on while my husband worked on fence. Yep, in the heat we were out there. It's about 15 degrees cooler in this yard where the coop is because it's under a bunch of low hanging trees, it's like a tree cave in that whole yard, I love it. When my Silver/Gold Laced Cochins get grown a little they'll go in there with my 4 Dark Brahmas. I've got to put roof panels on the top yet and a floor in and it'll be done. Even has rope lights around the top to draw them in at night. The 2nd pic is the back 1/2 of the inside. It was really simple to make with just 2x4's and pickets.
Joe, the 3 Araucana have a big 50x60 yard all to themselves to hang out in, their yard is right next to the Brahma yard. Yet where were they the whole time we were out there working? They were up and down the fence line talking to us lol My daughter kept feeding them grass, they're just darling birds!
Oh yea, Joe-forgot to ask-how do I get a Brown Red hen like this one I've got? The black one with the lacing on her neck? Will her and the rooster have that color of chick if it's a girl? She's started laying today :)
