***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Hot hot hot hot hot ... I know my birds survived last summer in the heat but I'm still worried about them. The turkeys are panting their heads off. We have ice bottles for them and a mister set up so that it sprays on the ducks and a corner of the run which they seemed to like yesterday. Was wondering what everyone else does to keep their birds cooler? We got the garden weeded and fertilized yesterday before the heat set in but had to bring the rabbits in yesterday afternoon. Planning on bringing them back in again today. They just can't cope with this amount of heat.

Our crazy neighbors built a fence down the middle of our shared driveway last month and even though state law forbids them from doing it, we can't get the police or city code enforcement to do anything about it. They keep claiming it's not shared even though two years ago they called the police on us saying we were parking on it and we couldn't because it was a shared driveway. Like I said, they're crazy. It's been a pain in the butt BUT we're beginning to think maybe it's a good thing (except for all the work involved) because we are going to move the driveway to the back of the property, turn part of the garage into the animal house complete with an a/c thus eliminating the need to build a coop or rabbit pen again or bring them in the house or freeze ice bottles all the time, and just to prove our poo is smellier than anything the neighbors can dish out we're moving the compost heaps to the old shared driveway where they have a nice view and smell of it. Two can play this game. We'll have a better driveway, the chickens will get more yard space and a better house, we'll get a bigger compost area, and in the end we won't have to even see the neighbors.
Lost my favorite hen today. I'm sure it was the heat. I knew I should have checked on them more. I hosed down the coop twice and changed there water a few times. We are making a mister out of a garden hose tonight, and I'm freezing bottles and putting them out around the coop tomorrow. They all stayed in the coop most of the day. I almost lost a baby NN also but I misted her with the hose she drank and seems fine now. The other two NNs were stepping on her and she was just laying there.

People I miss...

Al
Doc
Queen Peaches
Stimpy
Teach
Teach's "little" brother
Poultry & Bees
Henny Penny
OKCarla
Eggman Gerald
nnbreeder (already)
CJarvis (most of the time)
Jim in Norman (forget his handle for some reason)
Faery Feet
Mefordz
Muesky (most of the time)
And many more who don't come to mind at the moment. I especially miss the wild get togethers at the auctions, where we all gathered around a table in the back and hooted it up.

Just not the same place any more. Life moves on, I guess.

Jim, I agree! And there is a reason why the chicken people aren't on anymore....and thats all I'm going to say about that.

Some others I would add to that list, havinfun and yonder oak...

it really does go in cycles Buster, i remember when i first saw that, and you pointed that out- i've seen it a couple times since then- so we keep on keeping on and enjoy the folks that are here... and some very special folks at that....:)

meanwhile, would someone PLEEEEZZZZZEEE turn the heat down!! as my grandma would say...somebody would come home and find her a little grease spot on the floor... !

Dang it is hot out there! Kurt and I managed to get 1/2 of the 10x20 pen covered tonight when I got home from work. Hopefully tomorrow when I get home from work we can finish it and move my little cuckoo marans youngsters. They are ready to be out of their hoop house. Their pen will double in size when they get to the new pen. Birds did good today but tonight I have bottles of water in the freezer ready to go out to their pens tomorrow. I thought we had lost a chick but when I picked it up and encouraged it to drink a little it perked up. I also picked up some squash and put it in the fridge for Kurt to feed to them tomorrow afternoon. Hopefully it being cool will be a nice treat for them.

Oh for those that do the fermented oats what age do you start those? I bought some today and got them in a small trashcan with some plain yogurt. I am going to let them soak a few days before feeding them to the birds but wondering if the chicks can have them too or is it just for the bigger birds?

Still 93 degrees here at 9 pm. So far have left the swamp cooler running and the barn door open for now...will go out later when it is cooler and shut the door. The geese spnd the night inside the barn door in a big collapsable dog cage. Will need to come up with an alternative plan if the heat keeps up at night. Temps today were 111 on the truck thermometer when we went to town for stuff to fix the tractor.

We took the calf with the broken foreleg to the vet for a cast this morning. He has a cast that runs from his ankle to his shoulder and there is a pvc piece 16 x 3 inches attached to the back of the lef and fiberglass cast for additional support, but also to give him something to stand on. The lower edge of it extends to theground just behind his foot. He was actually standing and trying to walk on it. 4 - 6 weeks and it can come off. We put two stock trailers in the lot and topped the space in between with a 12 x 16 shade cloth. You have to improvise when there are no trees for shade.

Tomorrow morning we give the second wart vaccine shots to the heifers nd can move them to the bull for breeding....hope to get that done before it gets too hot.

Chickens have been keepting cool enough in the shade cloth covered pens and I wet down the areas twice today.
