Mitzi I just bunch the deer netting up everywhere. The more net there is the better they get tangled up. I did have some net draped around my brooders, but the snakes seem to get caught where the net is balled or bunched up. I say scrunch it up around the bottom of the outside ur pen on the outside. I have had 2 snakes get caught where the net was hanging but also seen a live snake make it through the net when it was hanging. When it is randomly scrunched up the snakes can't make it through the multiple holes. They get tangled before they get all the way through the net. Then I cut the net around the snake loose. The dogs will bark & carry on while they play tug of war with the dead snake. Not the Pyrenees though. He is even scared of the little turtles! DD dog fathes the turtles & plays w those too.

I have 2 red pyle babies that she could have is she wants to come get them. They are about 3 months old. pretty sure one pullet and one roo

well, a couple thoughts how old is she? right before laying their voices change and walk around making funny sounds? sometimes like a goose also, with this heat she may be reacting?

GOOSE!!! Thats a perfect example of the noise!!!! THATS EXACTLY WHAT SHE SOUNDS LIKE!!

I hatched out some bantam cochin eggs "just to see what would happen". My bad. I don't want more cochins at the moment. I have these two pure bred buff Cochin bantams. They were hatched on Friday, June 15 and at an unseemly early hour in the morning on Saturday, June 16.




I'm guessing I have a cockerel and a pullet. What do you guys think?

I bought my deer net 7ftx 120 ft @ TSC $20 I think. It cuts with scissors. Way easy to work with.
A little secret I learned when my sister worked @ Lowes--certain stores have a policy if customer wants to price match & it is less than $20 difference there is no questions asked. Believe there is a local district manager that put that into effect to create more happy customers. So they should price match it if you can find a compatible product. But the store I am speaking of will not match online prices.

I made shade cloth sides for a pavilion we use at a Bluegrass festival. I borrowed a friends sewing machine and sewed jute strapping to the edges then I put tarp grommets through the jute. We've been using it for several years now and nothing has ripped out even in pretty strong winds.

Ok all, I need help. I had some polish eggs in the incubator and they were coming along 2 pipped and one even zipped then the chicks died! Is it something I am doing wrong? I have hatched chicks from the roo before but not these hens. I was wondering if it was to much or to little moisture? Thanks for any advice

There are a large number of things that affect developing and hacthing embryos, as well as continue to affect the young birds for the first three weeks of life.
I would strongly suggest that you get a book called "A Guide to better hatching" this will cover everything from breeder bird selection, feed, health and care of the flock as well as incubation and hatching techniques.
The age of the breeder birds and health play a huge role, then the feed which affects the yolk protien, vitamin and mineral content, a pip and death has at least 10 possible causes. each stage of embryo death has several possible causes. This book covers all of it and it only costs $7. You can can also read on the Mississippi State University website that has a great number of poultry articles.

About the Bantam Cochins-the one I lost was special because he was the only one out of those 5 that made it. I think they got exposed to something that night at the auction, several other chicks bought that same night didn't thrive and died also. I never even knew how cool the black ones were until this little one started feathering in. I just set 24 Bantam Ameraucana eggs in the incubator so I'm going to hold off on any others right now. Thanks for the offers though. MJ, I'd love to get just a few eggs from you in a month or 2.
