***OKIES in the BYC III ***

MJ, My Silver & Gold Laced LF Cochins are 7-8 wks old now (staggered hatch) and just this week 2 of them sprouted red combs and wattles. They were the ones I've thought since hatch were boys. Bo Garrett said something recently that I believe is true. At least it has been so far the past 3-4 hatches. He said that boys will have big round stomachs when they're born, noticeably bigger than girls. Also with LF Cochins the boys feather in super slow. I've got an 8 wk old that is just now barely starting to get his secondary wing feathers. Both the 2 boys were born with no secondary wing feathers at all, the other were all born with them and grew them all really fast. Another reason I thought these 2 were the boys. The littlest one I've never been sure on because it's always been so little, but if I could luck out with only 2 boys out of the 6? I'd be thrilled.
OKRaceFan, Light Brahmas are relatively easy to find but I had a heck of a time finding Dark Brahmas. Don't you or your brother have an incubator? Your best bet would be to buy some eggs on Ebay, that's where a lot of the good Brahma breeders sell their eggs at. I still can't quit wanting the Gold Laced Brahmas. My 4 Dark girls are the sweetest things, but I had to end up getting eggs, couldn't find any anywhere else. Didn't Jim get some Darks from Newcastle awhile back?
I talking with a member on the Brahma thread that actually has some LF Buff Brahma eggs which I will probably buy. You need to post some pic of those GL ones.

As for the LF Dk's my bro got at Newcastle he told me that they died in 2 groups with in a week of each other. He does not know what happened. Came home from work and the were dead in the cage and then about a week later the same thing happened to the rest of them,

I hope this is an okay place to ask this. I'm in Piedmont (NW side of OKC). I have been slowly getting my coop and run ready for a few birds and hopefully within the next couple of weeks it will all be ready for them to move in. Now I'm trying to decide what to get and where to get them. My coop is 4 X 8 and raised off the ground and leads to a 20 X 30 foot run that will be covered with aviary netting. I would like to get 4-6 birds mainly for eggs. Not too interested in meat birds right now.

I have considered buff orpingtons and a couple of easter eggers. I've also had a family member ask if we can get "black and white speckled ones". I'm trying to get my own two kids (6 and 9) and my nephews (7 and 10) interested in the whole process so if I can get some birds they will enjoy that will help.

Does anyone know where in the metro area I can get birds when I'm ready? I have talked to a couple of people who were wanting to get rid of extra birds but it seems as though they are mainly wanting me to buy their old birds that aren't producing anymore or roosters. My wife is VERY opposed to the whole idea so I'm going to avoid roosters for now.

Anyway, any advice or suggestions would be very appreciated.

I'm about ten miles north of you but I have ugly chickens, Naked Necks, which will lay better and are smaller framed then the breeds that you mentioned.

Shawn, welcome!!! You are in the right place for help! There are lots of very knowledgeable and helpful people on this thread, sounds like you are on the right track, a couple of buff Orpintons, a couple of Americaunas and a couple of Silver Spangled Hambergs or Silver Laced Wyandotts would all be great layers and good choices as pets for younger kids to start with. Hang around and I am sure there will be some chime in with help in locating birds, there is always Mary's FleaMarket on Saturdays in Spencer!!! Talk to Micheal Daugherty!!! He is the man!!! Lynn

My tapatalk app is refusing to work with BYC again. Still works with other forums. So frustrating.

Work in the garden this AM. Time to get fall crops in. We planted a 100 ft of green beans, hopefully these produce better than the beans that were damaged by the hail storms. Picked our first armanian cucumbers, okra, sugar baby melon & some squash & tomatoes. Then made a batch of cucumber salsa. Had the salsa & melon for brunch. The salsa is so yummy!

Love finding new recipes I can use with my garden pickings!

Joe,
I will agree with you on a few points on that bird, wing carriage is still a bit low, tail carriage is a touch high, and the tail needs to finish developing (he is only 16 weeks old). as far as breast placement a proper OE bantam's breast should line up with tip of beak when a straight line is drwan like a plumb bob to the ground. Pidgeon breasted birds exihibit a breast far past this point and is more common in very hard female line birds. It has taken 10 generations of work to get the birds to this point still far from perfect but getting closer with more solid body and harder tighter feather less fluff, and better width. I expect another 4-5 generations to get closer to the standard for type but at present they will more than compete with what is out there in many other varieties as well.
This particular group seems to develop much better as cocks than cockrells but had very good results last year at nationals with his father and expect this year to be a bit better.

Okracefan wish I had known you wanted LF Buff Brahmas, they sold some babies at Guy Rose Auction Saturday for $3 each!!! Nice looking chicks!!!! Was tempted to get them for myself! Lynn

Starting at 6:30 am was able to spend several hours out weeding in the garden. Then it started getting sweaty hot! Pulled the garlic crop and it is in the carport on a rack drying....good crop this year...nice big cloves.
Let the geese and some of the chickens in the garden to explore...most huddled in the shade of the asparagus and when I called them back thru the gate, they headed for the water pans.
Stay cool and enjoy the day!

PS...the CW hen is doing much better this morning.

That same thing is what happened to the last group of chicks I got at the auction. I know it's always a risk getting babies from somewhere that they've been exposed to lots of adults, but it was hard for me to lose so many babies the weeks following. That's exactly the reason I won't get any more birds from outside sources, I'll just hatch them from now on.
The Gold Laced Brahmas are gorgeous and my Dark Brahmas girls are the prettiest calmest things, I don't know how I'd decide which to hatch.

Get lots of pictures, Joe!
I think you should start a breeding pen of Dark and Gold Laced Brahma, there's definitely a demand for them.
