***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Quote:
Last year when it was in the 110s here, I baked bread on my dashboard. Regular bread recipe, shoved the black cast iron dutch oven in the car for a couple hours, then dumped the bread in and left it the rest of the day. Wasn't half bad.

My tapatalk app is refusing to work with BYC again. Still works with other forums. So frustrating.
Work in the garden this AM. Time to get fall crops in. We planted a 100 ft of green beans, hopefully these produce better than the beans that were damaged by the hail storms. Picked our first armanian cucumbers, okra, sugar baby melon & some squash & tomatoes. Then made a batch of cucumber salsa. Had the salsa & melon for brunch. The salsa is so yummy!

Love finding new recipes I can use with my garden pickings!
What is a sugar baby melon? Will you have any Saturday? If you bring 1 or 2 to Newcastle I'd buy some. I am crazy for summer fruits; raspberries, blueberries, peaches and cantaloupe. - YUM!
Up North we call cantaloupe "Muskmelon", not such an appetizing name but it is the word that comes to my mind when I see them

I'm about ten miles north of you but I have ugly chickens, Naked Necks, which will lay better and are smaller framed then the breeds that you mentioned.
nnbreede'rs NNs are very nice, hardy birds and are pretty mellow for kids to handle. Orpingtons are mellow birds too. If you want some very sweet tempered birds for your kids, I recomend Cochins. They are teddy bears (then again, I am very biased; I adore all 40 of my Cochins + the 50 babies the hatched this year). Bantam Cochins lay rather small eggs so I have a couple EE hens for pretty eggs but they aren't as friendly though the lay well even in this heat. NNs are what I would have if I was going to have a laying flock.

That same thing is what happened to the last group of chicks I got at the auction. I know it's always a risk getting babies from somewhere that they've been exposed to lots of adults, but it was hard for me to lose so many babies the weeks following. That's exactly the reason I won't get any more birds from outside sources, I'll just hatch them from now on.
The Gold Laced Brahmas are gorgeous and my Dark Brahmas girls are the prettiest calmest things, I don't know how I'd decide which to hatch.

Get lots of pictures, Joe!
I think you should start a breeding pen of Dark and Gold Laced Brahma, there's definitely a demand for them.
I think NoCityBoy might have got those chicks at the same time you got yours - I hate losing babies - I am too soft-hearted for "farming' sometimes.

Do you were they came from?
I am sorry I did see who brought them in but they were not someone I recognized! MJ there is a slight difference in Muskmelons and Cantaloupes bu the average person would not know the difference, they are very similar in taste and are generally called by both names. A sugar Baby Melon is a very sweet variety of watermelon that is about the size of a football and is perfect for the average refrigerator or one or two people. McG I have thought of trying that in my van window a few times!!! Lynn

had a great party last night. Got some really cool fire works. Loved the water balloon and silly string fight. To day has been spent getting things back to normal had round 20 or more people over and would do it again in a heart beat. Think next time we need some horse shoes and darts added to the list of things todo. Ellie the black berry cheese cake was wonderful. Ill be sneaking some of that while the hubby is at work. Was gonna start a new diet and exercise plan tomorrow but will have to wait till that cheese cake is gone.
