***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Thought I'd share a pic of my ducks from today. I called it "Eager anticipation". They always line up and wait until their pond is filled.

It's hard to see my Khaki Campbell, Blackberry, in the back but usually she'll dive in before we finish filling. She climbs in the water bucket too. Our blues are in the middle ... Silver has the nice white bib and her mate is Boots. We're hoping our buff/runner cross Duc Duc will take up with Blackberry but so far he's only interested in chickens. Sigh. His bill is all pocked because they peck him through the fence but he just goes back for more. We put up a pallet fence today so maybe that will stop that problem.

Been busy canning this week. Canned peach jam, peach jelly, peach sauce, apple butter, sand plum jam, sand plums in syrup, peach halves, vegetable and tomato/basil soup, and beans. Now we have a dehydrator load of mushroom and squash and when they finish we'll have a load of onions too. Almost everything has died back or quit producing in this heat except for our butternut squash and our Chinese long beans. But I'm going to plant more tomatoes this week since it's supposed to cool down a little. Fingers crossed. Our sweet potatoes are growing like crazy too as are our melons and Hopi squash but so far all we're getting is male blooms. Beginning to wonder if that's caused by the heat??

Kass - sorry to hear about your rooster. We have a bantam roo that was so sweet and suddenly turned mean too. Our only saving grace is that he's so little we can scoop him up and turn him sideways and he can't bite us but he's made both me and my daughter bleed from biting our legs. Hope your wound gets better soon.

Nana glad your MIL is doing better, hopefully she has just been overdoing things and needs to rest up a bit.

Kass, LOVE your pictures!!! Sorry about your roo, our BA roo got after my 7 year old the other day. Jack went to pick up one of the hens making her squak and screatch and the roo didn't care for that. But so far he hasn't attempted to go after anyone else thank goodness.

Mitzi, thanks, I only got 50' of the hose up today. I did get the peppers weeded in the garden but I did it while the sprinkler was on, lol. I got soaked but I didn't have to worry about over heating. Hubby helped me move one of the hoop houses to new grass and added them on a little temp. yard so they won't have to be moved for about another 2 weeks. Sorry to hear the auction wasn't that big tonight. I need to get to some of the auctions we really need some 3 and or 5 gallon waterers. I have added 4 new pens in the last few weeks and we will pick up the rest of the supplies for at least 2 more next weekend.

I let 2 pens of roos out to free range today, that was hillarious. They spent the day chasing each other and playing in the yard. One found it's way to my front porch and I don't want that happening so I sprayed him with the hose. Hopefully I can keep them off of it, otherwise they will all be going to freezer camp. I think they know that once they start crowing they are done for because they are HUGE and still not crowing yet, lol. I almost hate to cull the big buff orphingtons they are much bigger than my other BO's were.

If anyone hears of a cheap coop for sale that would be easy to move please let me know. Our neighbors who are in their 70's want some chickens and some guineas. We are thinking build them 2 hoop houses but not sure when we will have time to do it. The guineas I have in the brooder and ready to move to a coop and I may just give them some of those if I can find them a coop fast enough. Besides I almost would rather buy them a coop than have to build another one, lol.

Well off to bed we have church tomorrow and then a day of working outside again. Plus I am sending my Nathanael to camp for the first time ever. It is going to be hard to trust his care to someone else. With all his medical issues he has never even spent the night with anyone. The minister and his son will be at camp this week and in his cabin so that helps.

Maybe at the next BYC get-together we should have a fabric swap?
I have a walk-in closet full.

Count me in on a fabric swap!
I bought a ton of fabric a few years ago, when I was "thinking" about learning to quilt. Actually, that was just an excuse to go to multiple fabric shops and handle the different colors and textures of fabric.

Here is another one I took of her today

Cruella de Ville from 101 Dalmatians comes to mind when I see that black V with the white feathers.

Whenever I do garden work in the summer I always do it w/ a hose, makes it so much more comfortable.

I have 5 boys that need to be sent to freezer camp. It will be my first to do w/o any ulterier motives (culling for injury) it is going to test my resolve to do it to perfectly healthy boys. But at least I have a couple under my belt now.

I agree w/ that Gary thinks of Elvis, so her name will be elvis if she is a boy and Anna if she is a girl (both of us are sci fi fans and Anna was the leader of the aliens in "V" she was a villian though.

Mitzi I took a few pic's this evening, out of all the ones I have from around the same hatch as yours I think all are pullets but one, I have more cockerels in the other hatches I think, but, this set is the oldest I have left and looks to me like it's getting easy to tell them apart but I could be wrong LOL

Cockerel left Pullet right

Five pullets

Three more pullets

Good thing my pigs haven't acquired a taste for duck LOL

My two new doe-lings they have the cutest blue eyes but you can't tell in this shot

The newly completed pig pen there are five babies left and they are hiding in here somewhere

11 new ducklings make 22 babies and two hens setting on eggs, We sure could use some rain my pond is getting low again

It was great to see BYC folks at the Newcastle auction this evening. We left early, as the birds were starting to sell a little after 7:00. I bought pickled eggs brought by Al and Muesky, purple keets hatched by Jcatblum's daughter, nectarines picked by Michael Daugherty's daughter, Macy. The grilled brats were delicious - I am going to fix them on the grill next time I make them, like they were apparently cooked this evening.

Saw MJGigimax and spouse, Buster, Jcatblum, Al, Muesky, Modernman, Michael Daugherty, Bfrancis, Ellimae (?), mamapapabee (?), and NoCityBoy.

Jcatblum - thank you for the information about a "deal" on Groupon for a good price on Vista Printing. I never realized that you could do essentially a nationwide Groupon review - so never would have found that Vista Printing deal in the Chicago Groupons.

Sadly, I missed all of the fun!

I don't think in all these years I have ever seen a columbian Wyandotte. For years all I ever saw was silver laced and white in LF. I used to have columbian bantam Wyandottes many years ago. Did you ever show them and how did they do for you.
I don't show but CJarvis has. Some of these birds are from his breeding stock and then I have his breeding hens.
This is Beau and he is molting. now.

The breeders and some pullets:

Blue Wyandotte:

A young pullet 2 months old still in juvenile feather She will molt out the stippled feathers

And there are babies hatching right now in theincubator - CW, BCW and Blue
