***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Cathie, I spent 2 solid days out in the sun putting up hoses and poking holes in them for misters this week. It'll get to you if you don't have hypoglycemia so be careful! It felt really good to be under the water while I was doing it though, as long as the water was hitting me I didn't mind at all.
I was at Newcastle for just a little while but it was way too hot. There were hardly any birds compared to the other times I was there. I think it's just too dang hot for people. The birds that were there looked miserable from the heat. I won't get any more birds from outside sources anymore but that didn't didn't stop me from admiring the Dark Brahma trio and the pairs of Bantam Cochins.
The white one w/ the black "V" in her top knot??? She (

) is a mottled houdan. And I really hope she keeps the V

When they grow up they are all black and white spotted, and I'm going to try and make a black and white spotted NN w/ a top knot. Now wouldn't that be a riot????

OMG that bird is cute

It reminds me of a Polish.
They aren't SUPOSE to be related to the polish, but they have become so rare that a lot of them were mixed. They are supose to be quite a bit heavier then the polish, originally in France they were dual purpose, not considered fancy at all but very utilitarian, Frances 1700's version of a "meatie" soooooooooo America does the meatie as the cornish X and France does it in style w/ the houdan!!!!!!! lol lol lol

I don't think in all these years I have ever seen a columbian Wyandotte. For years all I ever saw was silver laced and white in LF. I used to have columbian bantam Wyandottes many years ago. Did you ever show them and how did they do for you.

I would like to get a start in whites and silver lace. I am really not a color person so as long as tey are of good show quality stock and can be worked with I am open. I just wish more people would take up the breeding of LF Wyandottes as they are becoming rare. Bantam Wyandottes have always been popular, not so much for LF.
Do you show your birds? I noticed on your pics, that there is a pic of a rooster that looks like a D'Anver. I used to have them also and would love to get back into them also. I think I want too much. I want to get into LF white Rocks, Wyandottes (both Bantam and LF). I also would like LF cochins, I have never raised them before, I had the bantams but not LF. I still have a soft spot for OEGB. I like them in about any color. The dubbing of them is the only reason I never really bred them. I don't know how to do that.
I am being a bit too picky about quality but I have a reason. I have bred show birds or of show quality type chickens and pigeons for many years. I know what a decent one looks like. I see these birds that are suppose to be something and it does not even remotely look like what it is suppose to. Case in point, my MIL bought some chicks and one of them was suppose to be a silver lace wyandotte. It was a black chicken with one white feaher on it's back.....REALLY! I may or may not show again, but I want chcikens to l;ook like what they are suppose too. They both eat the same so why not have the better looking birds. That is my thoughts on it anyway. That is why I constantly ask about if folks show.
I do now have one chicken it is a fighting game (don't know what they are really called) it is a hen that just showed up in our parking lot at work. I caught her after a week of trying and brought her home. Presto, now I want my chickens back. That is enough of my ramblings.

The quote was from the "Handwritting on the wall" account in the bible. Yes he attacked me and punctured my leg today, this isn't the first time. He got me once before w/ injury and a couple of times w/o injury. One time I actually thought I killed him he had the miss fortune to attack me when I was close to a peice of metal and whatever he starts I finish, I keep hitting w/ what I have until he backs down. This has been going on for about 6 months or maybe a little less. I kept hoping it wouldn't come to this b/c he was sooooo good for so long and I really like him, but I won't be attacked by an animal I feed and shelter in my own yard. He is really good w/ his girls and w/ the teens there was no problem integrating them into the flock.

I'm 90% sure my leg is going to infect it is reall sore swollen and hard, it is a puncture, I tried to make it bleed as much as I could and washed it w/ soap and very hot water, as hot as I could stand, I need to figure out some way to soak it in epsom salts water, it is mid calf, so not an easy spot to soak.

Gary is convinced it's my fault he keeps coming after me. He says since I put myself as head he is challenging me. Which just makes me feel worse b/c I thought I was doing the right thing to keep him from being aggressive.

Kass nothing you did caused the aggression that this rooster is showing. Like people they all have different personalities. I treat all of my birds the same whether it be hen or rooster and I will tell you I am more leery of my hens when they have chicks then I am of my roosters.

I do have one rooster that I am going to have to decide what fate will befall him but since the Silver Leghorn back in '90 that is the only problem that I have had.

I pick my roosters up on a pretty regular basis, have to if you want to check condition and see just how they are doing physically. I don't trim spurs either which I'm sure will bite me later.

The one that I have now that turned aggressive was fine one day out of control the next and I tried all of the usual remidies to no avail. Just walking by his new pen will set him off and he hits the wire full force. Thankfully he is young and just had buttons for spurs but every hit on my arm was a cut and in just a few seconds I actually had blood dripping from my fingertips. But darn he is a beautiful rooster, good body type and his head is as near perfect as any that I have seen so I am torn as to what to do with him.

Thanks nnbreeder. At least I am not torn on that level, great color breed type, just emotional. My first chickens, first roo, and since he was so good natured up until now I had phyched myself into knowing I would never have to cull him like that. I can sympathize w/ trying to pick beauty over personality, the clasic nature vs nurture would his offspring by right of being his offspring get his nasty personality etc......
