This is my first year to plant sorghum too, but mine isn't heading yet. I only had a couple of stalks to survive the chicken highway. Seems I planted it right where the chickens decided to make a highway (after I planted it of couse) I'll save the seed this year and replant next year in a better location.
We've been impressed with ours. Our son with his size 13 feet stepped in the middle of the bed when the plants were only about six inches high. We thought for sure we would lose them but they bounced back. Then our kittens decided that they were fun to play with and nearly the whole bed was toppled over ... but once again they came back. I didn't let my chickens near them when they were small and now that they are working on five feet tall, they are pretty much impervious to them. Better luck next time with yours. I'm also growing quinoa for the first time. It's a lot more fragile in our stupid hot weather but it's still hanging on. They were both experiments for us.
