***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Welcome to all the new folks, sorry I have been MIA lately but swamped at work. Then today my computer that is supposed to have the best antivirus software avail. got yet another virus!!! Third one this year. Yet my 2 laptops we use at home and everywhere else (including McDonald's WIFI) don't ever have virus issues. Bless our tech guy here at work it was a bugger to get off my computer but all is well now. Hope tomorrow I have time to read the last few days posts and catch up with everyone.

Speaking of Roosters, I'm still chuckling over this passage from HIT BY A FARM by Catherine Friend.

"But one day as the chickens roamed the yard I noticed that the boys had different styles. Serge brought flowers, lit golden tapers, poured goblets of champagne. There was a quiet mounting, brief fluttering of wings. Thank you, ma'am. Much obliged. May I call on you again?

Romeo on the other hand, hid, waiting. Then, screaming,he chased the hen around the barn. Come back here, you stupid b&^%$. He grabbed the back of her head with his beak, flung her down, jumped her bones while she shrieked in distress. Wham. Bam. Feathers flew. He let her go, shook out his fine self. It was consensual, babe. Beside, you were asking for it."

"We ate Romeo."

Thought I'd jump on and share a few pics from the Estate today. First off, does anyone have any idea what this plant is? I have several popping up in my fence rows.

Our daughter with our year old turkey giving her a hug. She is the funniest turkey and loves to just almost crawl up in our laps and lay against us. We call them hugs.
I love catalpa trees! I looked years ago for them and never could find them.I want some so bad.
The picture of your daughter and turkey girl makes me miss my turkeys, mostly my 2 girls. They were lap turkeys like that also. They just had baby turks and the new owner has kept me updated all along. I wish I had a place where they could free range all day and sleep in the trees at night without stray dogs (or my dogs) getting ahold of them.

We were so excited to get our new birds home last night. Took them treats, talked to them, tucked them in, got up this morning and let them out. All seemed fine. I came home from work early to check on them and the two australorps were lounging in the shade. The two buffs were in the coop scratching around. They came out and were panting a little but seemed fine otherwise. I sprayed a bit of the run with water hoping it would help cool things off but they pretty much ignored it. A little later I was leaving to go have dinner with family and one of the buffs was in a nesting box while the three others were out walking around. All seemed fine.

We just got home and the buff that was in the nest is dead. What did I do wrong?? They have shade, water, plenty of ventilation in the coop....I'm at a loss. I felt of her to see if she were trying to lay an egg but couldn't feel anything. There was some waste around her rear but it looked like it was post mortem. Please help me? I don't want anything to happen to the rest of my birds. Do I need to add a fan inside the coop?? The temp in there does not seem higher than outside.

All three of the other birds are out foraging and seem to be acting fine.

The kids are dissapointed but haven't had time to get really attached. I think I'm more mad at myself than anything else. I just don't know what I did wrong?!

Dang, I'm depressed. The new boss just told me she wants to get rid of all our old bound volumes of magazines. We have some in an unbroken line back to 1932. That's 80 years of preserved knowledge. Time, Newsweek, National Geographic, Look till it went out of print...

Enough to break an old reference librarian's heart.

When you read an old article written in 1943, they had a different perspective from books you read now on WWII. They didn't know then we were going to win.

Maybe it is time to retire.
