***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Good morning all, awesome shift yesterday, so I'm heading home to get me some coffee. I would get some on my way home, but all the convienence stores are heathens that don't have whipped cream for your coffee, just don't see why anyone would drink it w/o whipped cream.

Blanchard was good for me at least! Bought my third pair of silkie seramas, just love those little things. A new buck and three doe rabbits - and half a dozen cages to clean up. Picked up some hatching eggs - so I have to fix my bator! Got some great quail eggs and some copper marans - tried for some others but they went too high until I know if I can fix this thing! They had an Indian blue peachick I keep kicking myself for not bidding higher on... Never seen a peachick there before!

Off to get the kids ready for church - going to be a busy day with services and all but would not change anything - just a perfect Sunday.

Artsyrobin, thats a pretty cool looking little fluffball! Silky right? I think I'm learning. Saw a few of those at the swap meet this morning.

I think your right about "Rose" being the top hen. She is sort of starting to be a bully to my other two Aussie's. I had to separate them on the roost tonight. She had the two younger birds cowering and even ran one completely out of the coop. She pecked at me when I shooed her away from the one left on the coop. I think we got that worked out though.

SDS

yep- that one is a silky- and have some in the bator now from a friend- seems he had no sicky issues, hoping so

on Rose, you could get a spray bottle and spray her if she gets to overbearing, some pecking is normal, hard not to intervene, i still tend to at nite when they are shuffling for space, i have one hen i actually cage at nite, since she has started pecking one of the chicks, mama isn't defending it- other suggestion is make sure in the coop they have a place to hide while they work things out

Just checking in. Put up 150 lbs of tomatoes yesterday. LOTS & LOTS of salsa. Was an exhausting day but worth it. We have enough salsa to get us through the yr. Next canning batch will be seasoned tomato sauce for pizza & spaghetti & such. my poor chickens are going to develop acid reflux from all these tomatoes!
Now off the clean & pack up the incubators, until spring. Also making a big batch of egg dip, yummy!
Sorry we missed Blanchard sale, but life is busy!

Good after morning all, I got up late, wife was on computer, kids went to church, I took a nap after breakfast, woke up with a headache, now eating a bacon and tomato sandwich for lunch, I didn't go to Guy Rose Auction yesterday due to the BIL coming, Ksane we are going to separate Azule ( the Blue Americauna) and a couple of pullets for Heater to have of her own, Azule and some other comrades have decided that it is fun to fly over the fence when we let them out in the mornings! So we are separating some of them and probably going to trim wings on some and see if that helps! No rain for us yesterday even though it did thunder a lot. Everyone have a great day!!! Lynn

Good Sunday Morning! The coffee is on and starting to kick in. :) I already water what the grasshoppers have left me which is pretty much my melons.
A cool 67°F here this morning, it hit 103°F here yesterday but the temp did drop 13°s late in the afternoon, their only calling for 95°F today.....
Hope y`all have a great day!

The grasshoppers are eating my stuff too. I try to catch them and feed them to the turtles and ducks and turkeys but I can't keep up with all of them. Don't want to spray anything but I'm losing all my beans to them. Hope we have a cooler day as well.

Congratulations! That was undoubtedly a lot of work.

Remind us - what is in your egg dip? That sounds like a healthy alternative to a sour cream based dip.

That's a LOT of tomatoes. What is egg dip? My mom makes a dip she calls daffodil dip that has boiled eggs, cream cheese, mayo, and garlic in that's fabulous. Is yours similar?

Yes the tomatoes are alot of work, but it was only 1 day of work & now it is done. I chopped the tomatoes & sweet peppers, josh did the onions & hot peppers, while the girls did the garlic & other ingredients plus managed clean up. Taron has decided canning isn't too bad.... It's the getting it prepped that is awful. Alexis has decided that she never wants to see a tomato agian & Josh learned even the day after cutting 60+ hot peppers & 20 lbs of onions you shouldn't attempt to put contacts in.
The egg dip recipe is
12 chopped hard boiled eggs
2T butter
2&1/2t liquid smoke
1T lemon juice
2t yellow mustard
1T Worcestershire sauce
2 dash Tabasco
1-1/2t salt or to taste
1t dried minced onion
1/4t pepper
3/4c mayo
Combine all into blender until smooth. Chill 4 hours or overnight.
We eat it on club crackers, veggies or even like eggs salad on rye bread. It is YUMMY!!

P&B you know those other guinea pigs came since @ Newcastle last time you said thankfully only 1 had babies. I bet Jaxon is excited about the babies!

ETA- I learned that frozen tomatoes are a HUGE timesaver in salsa making! Each wk I had been cutting the tops & bad spots off tomatoes that were damaged or not preferred at market (smaller than 6oz doesn't seem to sell so usually have3- 5 lbs left after each market). The unmarketable tomatoes were frozen. When I did the salsa I did 1 part frozen tomatoes to 1 part fresh. I thawed the frozen tomatoes & the skins slipped off. Threw them in the food processor 30 seconds later done! I hand chopped the fresh tomatoes & the salsa was just the right texture.
I will continue to use frozen tomatoes in my salsa in the future! Amazing how the tomatoes slip out of their skins. Wonder if peaches will work the same way?

Thank you for the recipe. I am going to make it to use up some of the extra eggs around here.

Yes, the second litter of guinea pigs had me looking up gestation time when they arrived. I had foolishly thought that we were "home free" after the first one kindled. Now, I need to learn how determine the gender of all the little guinea pigs and separate the ones that would wear blue ribbon from the ones that would wear pink ribbons, before we have an explosion of guinea pigs.
