***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Morning all, I started early but still was out working in the heat until a few mins ago. But I did get all the waterers bleached and refilled with water and some electrolite powder I still need to go out and turn on the misters to the pens. I also put out fermented oats for all the birds. It is so hot out there already. I think the rest of my day wil be spent in the house working in the AC.

Carl, let me know when it will be a good time to bring him out. I leave Tuesday for Florida and won't be back until the following Monday. But hubby will be here so he could bring Nathanael and Prince Charming out. We will need all the tips we can get since none of the kids have been to a show let alone shown a bird before.LOL

Well housework won't do itself and kids certianly aren't going to do it for me so off to work I go, lol.

A lesson in perspective. Oreo after his water boarding correction (still working by the way) views the water hose w/ suspcion and fear, to be avoided at ALL costs. (and not to sure about the large featherless chicken who sometimes carries it!!!)

Yeta the wonder chicken who helps me regularly as I flush out squashbugs w/ the same water hose views it w/ awe and wonder as the great and powerful caller of the brown crunchy bugs. I think she views me as a "fremen" calling the spice "worms" from the ground.

Hummmmmm I may have discovered the plot for the next great "B" rated sci-fi movie ................. large featherless chickens using just thier mental powers call insects from the ground for their small feathered "cousins" Can you tell I didn't sleep last night???? lol lol lol

I couldn't have said it better myself! I agree with you 100%

There's a 99% chance that the Sevin dust is all you'll need. I use either generic Frontline (from Ebay) or Ivomec Eprinex every 4-5 months as a preventative for lices & mites (it was probably lice you saw-super common). Those are the 2 products I tested personally myself on birds I'd gotten at an auction so I know for a fact they both will kill lice in 24-48 hrs without dusting or anything else. Lice spend their entire life cycle on the bird (unlike mites) so if you treat the bird you're usually good to go. Lice are the teeny tan/brown specks you see swarming all over a bird moving around pretty quick. The easiest place to see them is around the bird's vent. Mites are different and I've never yet encountered a bird that had mites. I didn't know the difference at 1st and thought they were the same thing. They're like the difference between fleas and ticks on dogs.
Thanks Ksane, My little polish is looking much better. These little lice/mites were almost white and very very tiny. didn't see any today, I appreciate the frontline tip, that would be much easier than the dusting. How much do you use?

So i started with my chickens this spring and my flock grew very fast chicken math and all
tongue.png
so i am in the process of down sizing a bit to what i would like to keep so i am going to sell some chickens tomorrow to Red Ryder mostly peanut packers from the hatchery that i have no use for right now. I Also have 3 Yokohama pullets, Bantam light Brahma pullet and and cute cute Cornish bantam for sale. I also have 2 JG roos that are gorgeous cheap. So if you know of anyone that is looking for anything like this let me know. I am also willing to do some trading for EE or Ameraucana Roo or Silkie pullet or hen.

I am going for the colored egg basket so my breeding birds will consist of Pure Ameraucana and Black Copper marans and i will be producing some olive eager's out of these crosses next spring. My personal egg layers will be EE, RIR, Light Brahma, Barred Rock, JG, Silver laced wyndotte, I ordered my egg layers from hatchery and i have purchased my breeders from a breeder in Broken Arrow.

Aside from chickens i have

4- White Chinese geese
1- brown Chinese
2- African
4- Welsh Harlequin Ducks
3- Buff Ducks
6- Muscovies

Oh and 16 Guineas

So as you can see i have gone to the birds this year and have even gone as far as digging a pond for the geese in the front of the house! My birds are free ranging with guard geese and dogs during the day and cooped at night with run.

Ksane most all grains have enzymes called "anti nutrients" in them, basically bind or make not bio-available nutrients that are in the grain, but most one stomached animals (humans and chickens included) can't get all the benefits from digestion. Fermenting is a form of "pre-digestion" for lack of a better term, this breaks down those enzymes making the nutrition already in the grain more bio-available for use by the animal eating it. Fermenting grains prior to eating them is an age old practice across all kinds of cultural divides, but was mostly cast aside by our "microwave" culture. (not literally the microwave, but wanting all our food already prepared or ready to eat in 3.5 seconds.)
