***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Finally home from working all day. I'm tired. Still haven't quite recovered from my heat exhaustion. I'm battling headaches and muscle cramps off and on. I think I'll go get some gatoraid and see if that helps. The chickens seem to be doing fine in their a/c house. I'm not going to like the electric bill when it comes next month I'm sure, but it's a lot less hassle than having to go out every hour or so with ice bottles or running the mister constantly so that the yard becomes a mucky mess.

We lost a rabbit today. It had been sick anyway but we were giving it a chance to recover instead of putting it down but I guess this heat was just too much even with a/c. RIP Marshmellow. At least we have her babies to continue with. We have to butcher tomorrow. Not looking forward to the actual "doing the deed" part. But looking forward to having rabbit meat in the freezer and on my table.

We are having trouble with our cable Company...Allegiance...seems the service number is disconnected.... will have to try again in the morning.
Whooping cough shots at Walgreens are $63.99 and they will file your insurance... pertussis is so dangerous that we are getting our shots.

So far everyone is doing well with this heat...

Question for everyone - my hens are now 6 mo old still no eggs they are good sized healthy - might this be due to the heat?

What breed are they? I am not an expert. I know my Cochins pullets sometimes start to lay at as young as 5 mo. but not all of them do. If I was a pullet, no matter what breed, i wouldn't want to start laying in this heat.

My Mottled Blue hen let everyone know when she layed today, talking/clucking on and on. She still isn't as vocal as my LF hen, Peaches, what a Diva! - definitely sings an Opera aria when she lays. She is broody now and gets a whole gallon of ice by her nest every day.

BlanchardOK, I'm sure it's because of this awful heat. My Cochins aren't laying since it got so hot but my Orloffs and Faverolles are, which really surprises me.

And I just had a baby LF Cochin hatch in the incubator! The Brown Red hen laid an egg the day after OKRacefan took the Brown Red rooster. I stuck it in the incubator a few days later and the cutest little baby Cochin just hatched out of it

Lost 2 langshan in the heat. We lost the roo & hen from MJ. I had her check on them several times today & they had pans of cool water to stand in. The trees complelty shade their pen in the afternoon, not much else we could have done for them. We haven't yet lost a RIR or EE. Never lost one last yr either.
Tomorrow is going to be another scorcher. We will be @ farmers market early & hope to be done early.

Anyone imagine having 25000 chickens? Can't imagine even storing enough feed to get through the wk!
