***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Here is my newest addition to my LF Cochin family. Not sure what color they will be. I am thinking that the 2 darker ones will be blues or splashes, the multi brown colored one might be a Lemon Blue or a Red Brown. Not sure if the black Roo is the daddy or if the Brown Red is pops. My Splash hen went broddy within 2 weeks of be separated from the black and put in with the BR. I also have a Lemon Blue hen in with the BR roo. Still have about 10 eggs under momma hen thinking that they should be hatching this week.

OMG I love these babies!!! It looks like 2 Blues (1 dark and 1 lighter) and a Lemon Blue to me- you're so lucky, they're beautiful!

Can't sleep since real estate is stressing me. When the economy tanked Ft Sill area wasn't immediately impacted & we didn't prepare for the fact that it too was vulnerable. We sold 3 of our houses this spring, but we really just walked away from them-- not a big $$$ maker. Have another house on the market that we are droppig the price on again. Anofher house my sister spent the last 2 yrs leaving in & just recently moved out this spring-- in the time she lived there the house dropped $30k. I had counted on selling a few more of our rentals & using the equity to pay for our build, but the economy may force us to continue being landlords & delay our build unless we want to finance the construction.
We have had our heart set on building with cash. Then began to consider other options as we have grown impatient. Trying my best to think about how good it will be to have a new house & no payment. Sure we are cramped in this tiny space, but it could be worse right???

Does anybody know were I can by some seeds for planting to grow the ingredients for organic feed?

There are a few that have talked about it on the feed thread. For a small amount of chickens sprouts & microgreens could be a good option for treats. Most feed recipes contain wheat, soy & corn plus other ingredients. Could be challenging to grow all the feed for your flock.

I thinking that things are just slowing down abit due to this being election time. When I worked retail we saw this slow down every 4 yrs. If you can wait and see who gets in the White House, this will make difference on what the market will do.

I do know that new home building is on the rise again. Out here in the Blanchard area they are building like crazy, not just houses but additions, if they can get over 2 acres they are putting as many house as possible on it.

If I were I would hold off and build it debt free!!!!

I have some "gaurd dogs" like that! lol
I got my incubator today, this has the potential to be a bad thing.

oooppps...you are sunk.

I have a question and hope somebody smarter than me sees it........I THINK it was on here that I read about Chickens being Lactose Intolerent (SP?). Anyway, today I was reading about Bresse, a French breed and it said that they are fattened-up by feeding them grain and whole Cows milk....now I'm confused...does anybody know???? Thanks
I make my own yogurt from milk and use some for the chicks with no problems.

We found a Modena pigeon with a banded leg on Sunday in our garage. We are currently looking for her owners, but if we are unable to find them we will probably need to find her a new home (we are ALL a little tempted to keep her, but we aren't really set up for a pigeon and we have no "friends" for her).

If you know someone in our area who keeps these kind of pigeons and would like to have her, please message me. Thanks for the help.

The leg band numbers will tell you the breeder and the letters give the abbreviation of the Pigeon club where the owner i a member.. When we found a homing pigeon this past year, I sent an email to the Homing Pigeon of America group's president with the id information and how to get in touch with me. The owner was able to contact me and we returned his pigeon. I was able to google the grou based on the letters on the leg band.

Quote: yes, hang in there a while longer. Prices should go back up.

okracefan: We already emailed the NPA Secretary (the band was an NPA band) and put a message on a pigeon keepers forum and also posted on Tulsa Craigslist. The people on the forum tell me that this breed of pigeons doesn't really fly much and it probably belongs to someone in the area but we have asked our neighbors and nobody is claiming it.

Christina, life has a way of working out despite our plans. It may not get better but something else will make you realize it's all really not so bad anyway. And yes-it can get a whole lot worse. I'm so in awe of what you do and what you have and your endless amounts of energy. You're an inspiration.

About the lactose intolerance-yes, they are lactose intolerant. There's tons of info on the net about it and so many BYC threads that I couldnt pick just a few to link to. Yogurt is one of those things that people give their chickens because "everyone" says to. It doesnt kill them so people assume it must have worked. Chickens are either going to die or get better no matter what we do. It's easy to assume they got better because of the yogurt but they just get better in *spite of it. There are specific bird probiotics that would be a lot better to use if that's your intent.
There's just one thread at www.backyardchickens.com/t/534258/yogurt-for-chickens-friend-or-foe-am-i-hurting-my-chickens
But google it and you'll find hundreds more links. Try to read factual links instead of just "chicken forum" links. Good as chicken people are sometimes they just pass along info they've heard as fact ;-) Chickens do love yogurt and probably the most it'd do is cause loose stools. But then chickens will scarf down newborn mice and they're not carnivores either.

Oh those cochin babies are adorable!!! So much cuter than the guinea keets we just kicked out of the house yesterday, lol.

Christina, the market is why my house in town is still not up for sale. We did have someone call us last weekend and want to buy it BUT they want us to carry the note, they have no $ to put down and they only want to offer 25,000! I wouldn't even take $25,000 as a cash offer, lol. It is a crazy market right now. I would just hang on and pay cash for your build. I really wish we could have paid cash for our house we are in now. Of course if the market ever comes back up and we sell the house in town we can almost pay our place off. Just hang in there it will get better.

On lactose with birds, I have given ours yogurt in small amounts when giving antibiotics but we stopped (now just offer some probiotic powder sprinkled on their food). It just doesn't seem right to give an animal milk from a mammal when birds do not nurse, they don't have the systems to break down milk protiens. That is like humans and cows milk. You hear about "lactose intollerance" but in reality cows milk is hard on your stomach, it may take YEARS for it to affect you but it can cause all sorts of problems for your gut and somache. That is why when parents have issues with baby formula making baby spit up or constipated I have to explain to them that cows have multiple chambers to their stomachs so they can break down the protien in the cows milk but humans are not made that way. Goats milk is the closest you can get to human milk really. I could go on and on, with this topic, haha.
