***OKIES in the BYC III ***

When ever we have a left over ham bone from the holidays I make split pea soup. It is so easy I dont even have a recipe. Onion, celery and carrots chopped fine and sauted till soft in a little olive oil. Add water, bay leaf, corse ground pepper and the ham bone. Simmer for an hour or so till the meat falls off the bone. Rinse and add split peas and simmer till soft. I don't add any salt because the ham is usually salty enough and I don't use much anyway.

Remember the stray dog??? He went after one of the goats the other day & we have had a shock collar on him & kept him from the goats. Tonight he managed to get one of the goats & kill it. None of us could get the dog off, no even DH. Girls & I had a long talk. No stray dogs no matter what. DH took care of the dog. Neighbor across rd raises mini horses. Everyone around has calves. A dog that goes for small animals throats could do a lot of damage.

Sounds good; worcestershire, ketchup. I know cumin is often used with black beans and I like it but this recipe sounds savory in a different way.

I love to read cookbooks. I have one written about chile pepper by a social anthropologist. It traces the spred of the pepper from the Americas across the world and even has recipes for deserts with chiles. Chocolate cookies with a bit of chile powder, really delicious.

One of my MIA guineas showed up this evening with 5 keets. I caught them, but have no game feed or starter right now. Advice on what to feed them till I can get to the feed store tomorrow??
I agree with jcatblum that some regular feed will work for a few days. You don't want to feed egg layer too long, because it can damage kidneys in young birds. I don't worry about that however when it is only fed for a short time. I feed everyone egg layer when I run out of All Flock Raiser.

So very sorry about the dog and the goat. Finding out that a dog isn't domestic critter friendly is so heartbreaking.

jen- on the faverolle, they tend to be so docile other birds will pick on them- can you section off an area for her and her friend? i love mine, they are so sweet- Sammy is doing better after being wormed

Sunday my husband and I moved the bantams from their little ark into the barn. Figured they could use the shelter from the cold.

Tonight while making rounds I noticed no one was on the roosts. I investigated and found the silkie, her baby, one of the buff Cochin hens, the blue frizzled Cochin pullet, and the buff Cochin rooster all shoved into this one nest box for sleeping. I guess they're cold?

Here's Charlotte checking out the nest box.

Here's everybody grabbing a snack, even the broody.

My poor molting silkie. She's so desperately ugly right now. Poor thing.

And here's Grace. She's stubborn.
