***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Gallimycin? Where did you get it? Thanks for the tip. I've got a couple with the sniffles that I can't seem to get gone.

Think I bought it from smiths poultry. Around $30 Only takes 1/4 tsp per gal if I remember correctly. I have shared it with several & still have half of it.

I still haven't made it to sleep. This insomnia is awful. Crazy thing is I was up all night & can't think of anything I actually did. I watched 2 hours of TV but what was I doing the rest of the time? Taron is still asleep & I am going to let her stay in bed as long as she wants. She was so upset I think she exhausted herself.

Nana, I'm so sorry about Lil' Guy. I know he was special to you. In his memory you've got all those other little bearded D'Anvers now. I just can't get over how fast birds are lost. I've never owned a species before that just died at the drop of a hat for no known reason. I'm used to species that you can vaccinate, take care of, feed right....and they live out their entire lifetimes. Owning chickens is kind of sad, I love em' so much.
I'm going to order some Gallimycin to have some on hand.
And as far as the dude who died from eating roaches? You just gotta wonder what these people are thinking!
I feel so bad for Taron. Those 1st few seconds when you wake up and then realize the awful thing that happened before you fell asleep? I hate that she's going through it. I know people say "worse things could happen". But really-that doesn't make anything any better for her right now today. I've lost hand raised goats (and sheep) that way. I'm in my 50's and the horror stays for a long long time.

MacG that is a sad looking silkie at the moment. I would be very concerned if I hadnt seen the bird in person at poops! At least you know she will be pretty again very soon.
Thanks for the kind words on the loss of our buck. We definatly will not allow any stray dogs on our place, and I am guessing DD will want a few more goats in time. She is pretty upset tonight, because she saw it all & of course he was her favorite goat.
Heck, even though I know how pretty she normally is, I was worried myself until I saw all the new feathers start coming in. Poor thing.

Amen Mitzi, well said. And where can you order gallimycin? Does have to be through your vet?

Ok, I looked it up and Gallimycin is erythromycin. The powder is at:
http://www.qcsupply.com/540299-gall...m_medium=cpc&gclid=CM_Ci6Ca9LICFQfonAodM3gAIw

for $19 plus shipping. It looks like they use it for MG (Mycoplasma gallisepticum) which is one of the super common respiratory infections that cause 'rales' (rattley breathing) and coughing. That looks like a good price for it and I know the Denagard tastes horrible so maybe this stuff will taste better. Denagard may work great but if the birds don't drink the water, it's useless.
ETA: Intersting. There's more info at ftp://ftp.fao.org/ag/agn/jecfa/vetdrug/2-2006-erythromycin.pdf
but the dosage works out to 20 mg per 2.2 lbs for 5-7 days. It might be cheaper to go to Petsmart and get erythromycin in 250 mg tablets labeled for fish. Too bad it's near impossible to pill a chicken. Although....you could mix it up and break down the dosage and give it to them by syringe if it were just a single chicken.

Mitzi I agree farm life has come with some hard lessons for the kids. They definatly experience things they would never experience in town. I ment to say early, I am not the busy one. I can only do so much because my kids & husband are always there to help.
Nana glad you made it home safe. The birds always look new to me after not seeing them for a few days. Is your garden gone? The frost took out everything here.
Rebecca what type of antibiotics did you use to treat the birds? This past yr I have been treating water with Gallimycin when needed & have had great sucess. It knocked out stuff that Tylan50 didn't.
Those of you that raise roaches---- just was reading a news story about a guy in FL (I think) that died after a roach eating contest at a pet store. The prize was a snake. None of the other contestants became ill. Craziness!!

No worries here, only chickens eat the dubias in this house!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Missed the deadline for ordering my green tomatoes for chowchow. The market where I get produce hasn't had their homegrown for two weeks and I couldn't get my fall tomatoes in early enough.
With Okieland having a freeze, may not be able to find any unless someone near me has any to sell.
If you do, PM me and we can work out something. Need 10 - 15 pounds.

Yes Christie, the freeze got everything. Hubby had ciut the vines on the sweet potatoes, so we will dig the rest before this next rain.
He didn'y know to cut the vines on the regular potatoes. He didn't know I had some growing. Will check those but may not get many.

Mitzi and MJ...LilGuy was a toerag but sure did like him. He would hit my leg every time I got close to the tweo bluie cochin hens he thought were his girls. A feather duster just can't do any damage.

Gorgeous photos!!! If I didnt know that NNs were supposed to look they way that they do, I would be pretty worried about that chicken! They look like an interesting breed to have, just havent gotten around to trying them yet. This year Im trying Araucanas.
