***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Poco how are your black skinned NN's doing? What genders did you end up w/, any scaleless?
I've got four black-skinned NNs. I think I have two male and two female. One of the females with white feathers is missing a stripe of scales on her legs, so she carries the scaleless gene. I have't re-checked the others. When they were a week old, I got out my strongest reading glasses and inspected NN legs. Only the white one had an obvious smooth stripe. Now that they are older, I may be able to see the same thing on one or more of the NNs. They are sharing a coop and run with a cream legbar cockerel and a white Chantecler pullet (hatch mates).

How many of your chicks carry the scaleless gene?

Just a hello from Jones, OK. I've been raising americuna's for a couple of years and love raising chickens. Since I recently threw a bobcat and coyote buffet, I had to restock the coop! Giving barred rocks a go this time around.

well, here's the floor plan I came up with today.. Let me know what you all think. Started some apple butter in the crock pot too, wish I was as good at drawing as I am at cooking!

The girls & I picked the last of the corn & shucked it. I didn't count but 100+ ears. You can fill the chicken love. They enjoyed all the worms, ears that were not filled in & tips I broke off. My hands & back are aching now. think I did 3 ears for each of the girls doing 1. The goats tried to help us out, but they were quickly relocated to their pen. Told DH he could prep it for the freezer since I planted, picked & shucked it. He agreed but when he gets home & finds 3 bannana boxes over flowing with corn he may change his mind.
Taron now wants to grow a plot of corn just for the animals since they love it so much.
Hope to see some pics from the Newcastle show & reports from those who attended.

what i did in our 10 x 10 coop is similar, but i have a roost along 3 walls and the nest boxes under a roost in the corner- since they have their fav boxes, no matter how many i put in there, they go for that one... we have 20 in there- you generally don't' want the boxes higher than the roosts, since they will tend to sleep there

Quote: the nest boxes are built and will just fit under the window. there are 10 total, 5 double stacked. DH made them last weekend. I thought I was supposed to avoid roosts over nest boxes.. We made the top of nest boxes very slanted so they can't roost up there. There's a pic on my page of them. Anyway, we plan to put the roosts about 4 ft high, parallel to each other, and add a chicken walk- up. So they will be higher than boxes.

I thought it was the other way around. Roosts HIGHER than the nest boxes.
