***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Spent today finishing the goose house. Still need to add the shingle roof over the tar paper and then paint, but Ninya and Charlie now have a real coop. Saturday I'll finish raking under the other 30 pecan trees.
Pretty Brahmas. I have three light brahma chicks that are three weeks old. Hope they are as pretty.

Good morning okies!!! a bit nippy this morning! had the faverolles out yesterday 'helping' me clean and sammy discovered the feed bin

and here is my tailess one- weird... still guessing whether she is just slow or just not going to have a tail

Morning Okies,

Kass - There were two red NN hens at the Coweta sale last night, but they looked like ugly stepsisters compared to your lovely, lovely girl.

Joe - Wonderful to see you. I'm so sorry I missed the Green Country swap/sale. I've had a few minor truck ailments leading up to the clutch problem. With a full inspection and a new clutch assembly, I should be worry-free (truck wise) for the next year.

Have a great day, everyone : )

Thanks Poco, I couldn't be happier w/ Reba, she is stunning, I think anyway, and she has a good laid back personality.

So, didn't get the new coop started this weekend like I wanted.. Youth rifle season got in the way. DS got a doe this am. So, I'm obsessing about the floor plan of the coop. We are moving in an 8x10, and really have too many for that space. Nest boxes are built, so trying to decide where to put the roosts. Literally doing a graph paper drawing of how I want it.. So, I've tried to read up on parallel vs ladder roosts.. I still can't decide. And we are planning first roost 12" from the wall, next one 10" from that... (will be 3, 10' roosts) Using 2x4's, narrow side up. We have electric so not worried about freezing toes. Any advice? I know I am over-thinking. It's what I do best..

I like all the roosts at the same level. I think it cuts down on the fighting and arguing for the top rung, helps them to spread out more and no one gets pooped on. Mine are parallel to each other and in the center of the coop away from the walls w/ a walk around path on all sides.

I got a little pullet from Elie Mae tonight, think she is a Olive Egger - Americauna beard and dark feathered legs and feet. I can keep her with my Cochin flock and will know not to hatch the olive eggs. i already do that with an Easter Egger. Yeah!, I get another chicken and don't have to try to figure out more pens!

That's awesome!

Hadn't thought of that! Because we are having to put roosts so close together, will I have issues with feather picking if I put them parallel? So many of mine are molting right now I have no idea if they are picking feathers...
Mine do not pick feathers their roosts are about 1 foot to 1.5 feet apart. I don't think there will be issues as long as they don't already pick feathers and there are plenty of roost space. If you have a roo all the ladies like to roost next to him and that set up allows for the most ladies to be next to him. Oreo in always surrounded on all sides w/ his leading ladies.
