***OKIES in the BYC III ***

I just received a call from our daughter. The doctors have confirmed that baby Kendall has pneumonia (severe case) and will be on a ten-day regimen of antibiotics. We're praying that's the worst of it.

Thank you, everyone. Knowing others are thinking happy thoughts for Kendall and her family helps.
Will continue to keep Kendall, her mom and your family uplifted in prayers.

Have been away for three days and just now reading up. Emach and poco, thoughts and prayers headed your way for your loved ones. Hoping for quick and strong recoveries.

The show room at Shawnee will be open fro 3 to 9 p.m. Friday, and again at 7 a.m. Saturday. Judging begins at 8:30 a.m.

Looking forward to seeing a lot of friends there.

Came back this afternoon after 3 days away, a little anxious about a couple of things. Have an incubator going that needed to have the turner removed and water increased yesterday, but didn't want to ask son-in-law to do it (sometimes better he doesn't do things as he usually has a "better way" to do things, although he's not really a chicken person at all. Had a sterelite brooder full of newly-hatched (a few days difference in some) chicks that I wasn't sure how well he'd care for--their water was totally dry, and their food empty, but all OK.

The third thing was a kind of amazing situation for me, at least. Tuesday, I heard a stressed chick in one of the silkie pens, but couldn't find it for quite awhile, although I searched hard. Finally realized it was a half-mashed egg in the nest. It hadn't completely shrink-wrapped yet, so it might have made it out on its own, but I finished peeling it out and put it in with the other tinies. It was definitely ready to hatch--a white showgirl. This was late in the afternoon. The next morning, Vashi came in from watering and said he had the chick--thought it was dead, but wasn't sure. It was wet, cold, and lifeless. Had apparently gotten in the waterer, but had also gotten itself out. I thought it was dead, as it felt partially stiff, so I wrapped it loosely in paper toweling and put it aside for later disposal. I normally go to extreme lengths to be sure an endangered babe has the best possible chance of survival and have previoulsy revived lifeless-appearing babes. He later put it in a plastic bag with other things to be disposed of and we both forgot about it. Several HOURS later, he heard weak peeping from the bags, and sure enough, it was alive, so he called me in. It was still very cold, but dry. I warmed it with the blow dryer and fed it a tiny bit of a very thin gruel of warm water and baby bird formula and put it in the brooder again, as we were leaving in the morning. It seemed OK in the morning, but I didn't expect Ed (the s-i-l) to be able to give it any extra care. To our amazement it was acting completely normal; if it didn't have only four toes on each foot, I wouldn't have been able to tell it from the others! They are sometimes very resiliant little creatures!

Trying times for so many. Hoping that outcomes are all positive. Hey folks, I'm in a bind. My sweet Swedish Flower Hen has gone broody and I want to encourage that. But, I've got nothing for her to hatch. Does anyone have a few hatching eggs? I'm only looking to hatch birds that will lay white, tinted or very dark brown eggs. I'm in Collinsville but would be willing to drive a bit. Let me know. Thanks.

Hi all. Kass is going to help me out with some eggs. Wonder if that handsome devil Ari has been wooing the ladies successfully?

I have noticed a lot of crows around our area lately. I have started feeding my chickens inside of their coops to hopefully deter any crows hanging around in the pens.
I have noticed a lot of sparrows around my pens, droppings in my waterers!

Your post and the post about it being so warm prompted to treat my birds with Sulmet. Next they will get some vitamins.

a thought on the sparrows, what if you put feeders for wildbirds on the opposite side of where you have chickens? would that deter them from being in the runs?

Betsy, love that little chick! determined!

i discovered if you load the mobile version of byc(link at the bottom), alot of the extra clutter is gone and alot easier on the eyes!

Cathie I'm getting usually two FBCM eggs per day and three tinted (RIR and Austrolorp). The tinted will be EEs, the FBCM *should* be pure. I'm stopped incubating for now so all the eggs have been going in the fridge but I can save you some if you want- you know where I live! ;)
Well I see you're getting some from Kass. Good luck with your broody- it's going to be winter (maybe if it ever comes this year???) when they hatch!
