Finished processing the last of our meat birds today from the first set. I have 40 lbs of chicken on the bone and 58 lbs of chicken boneless and skinless in my freezer right now
... and another 23 birds in the brooder what will be ready after the first of the year. Which I guess is better than one of my friends who has 640 lbs of pork in her freezer(s). I told her we needed to work out a trade with each other.
Our little bird we hatched is doing great! We moved him/her out to the coop in a pen with a cornish that has been extremely slow growing and, to our surprise, the cornish, which is male, has taken Gussy "under his wing". Literally, Gussy slept under the wing of the cornish last night. Who woulda thunk it??
Silver, our remaining duck, has taken her place in with the chickens just fine. She's learned to fight for her place when I feed treats and she has made a nest in the house that she defends. Only odd thing, since she lost all the other ducks, she won't get into her pond and swim. She bathes by splashing water over herself from her water bucket ... and she's the one who was ALWAYS in the pond before. Not sure what the deal is.
And, in the worst timing in history, we set 7 turkey eggs on 1 Dec. ... aaaannnnnnddddd we will be gone 28 - 30 December. As my son said "Epic Fail". Luckily by then my husband will have his new incubator that he's getting for Christmas and we can move the eggs into it and they should be fine until we get home on the 30th if they hatch earlier than that.
