***OKIES in the BYC III ***

I have a raging headache this morning, so had to have some breakfast to be able to take some ASA, so what is a girl to eat for breakfast ...................... gluten free brownies (w/ walnuts of course for the protien and antioxidants) and milk.
Sounds good to me!!! Besides I think chocolate is supposed to be good for a headache, well that sounds right anyway!

They have dark chocolate oatmeal too now ... just saying ... that way I can pretend I had a good breakfast! Lol.

Finished processing the last of our meat birds today from the first set. I have 40 lbs of chicken on the bone and 58 lbs of chicken boneless and skinless in my freezer right now

... and another 23 birds in the brooder what will be ready after the first of the year. Which I guess is better than one of my friends who has 640 lbs of pork in her freezer(s). I told her we needed to work out a trade with each other.

Our little bird we hatched is doing great! We moved him/her out to the coop in a pen with a cornish that has been extremely slow growing and, to our surprise, the cornish, which is male, has taken Gussy "under his wing". Literally, Gussy slept under the wing of the cornish last night. Who woulda thunk it??

Silver, our remaining duck, has taken her place in with the chickens just fine. She's learned to fight for her place when I feed treats and she has made a nest in the house that she defends. Only odd thing, since she lost all the other ducks, she won't get into her pond and swim. She bathes by splashing water over herself from her water bucket ... and she's the one who was ALWAYS in the pond before. Not sure what the deal is.

And, in the worst timing in history, we set 7 turkey eggs on 1 Dec. ... aaaannnnnnddddd we will be gone 28 - 30 December. As my son said "Epic Fail". Luckily by then my husband will have his new incubator that he's getting for Christmas and we can move the eggs into it and they should be fine until we get home on the 30th if they hatch earlier than that.

It's taken me a while but I finally scored a tub that suits me to make my chicken plucker it's an old steam kettle out of a institutional kitchen, I'll have to do some cutting on it and it should be perfect and being stainless it's just what the doctor ordered, Some one on the site and I can't remember who offered to help with the cutting and welding on the stainless so if you see this drop me a reminder I'll need to yack with you I can't weld the stainless myself..

In other news I'm going to have my phone disconnected in about a week or so and my internet will go away with it, so I'll be off the grid for a few months while I get other priorities set right then I'll be back online, I'll miss my daily dose of BYC but I'll still be making some of the sales so I'll be seeing some of you around at those...

The bird/s think it's spring this morning the warm south wind blowing in ...All the roo's are crowing extra loud an the hen's are singing..Need rain it's sure dry..
One of my apple trees and two of the redbuds had blooms today. This is crazy weather.

We have a lot of crows too. They chase away hawks and don't hang out by the pens. DH puts corn out for them across the yard. The sparrows like the chicken food and water.

Sparrows are horrible here. I'm catching and disposing of a few each day...nasty things!
Because of the CRD, I'm feeding the entire flock with18% medicated hog starter pellets that has oxytetracycline and mixing up fresh soluable tetracycline daily. Each bird with the sniffles and sneezes is getting a shot of Tylan 50 for three days. Several have been getting Vet RX wiped across their noses and faces....good thing my flock tolerates being held. Thanks Carl for the feed recommendation...the birds love it. I got enough to feed the flock for two weeks.

Lost two more today: a really nice Splash Rosecomb hen and a young black Wyandotte pullet.

Bill are you coming to Shawnee this weekend?

We have a Spangled OEGB hen sitting on 5 eggs that are due to hatch soon. I didn't write down the date she went broody on the eggs....so it will be a surprise. She is covering some d'Anver eggs as well as a few of her own.

Power was out in our neighborhood when I got home tonight. We have more than our fair share of the power going out here. Wonder why it is such a problem?
It came back about an hour later. Almost had to help Jack get his generator going. He had just put new chicks in his brooder. Every Monday is hatching day on our street. I don't know how long he will keep his incubators going this year but he is still looking for eggs.

How are your hens doing with egg laying in OK. My orphingtons are about to quit. The short days are really slowing things down. I'm putting in some lights that come on at 0500 and hope to have them pick up the egg count. I was wondering if any of my fellow OKIES have had any luck with suplemental lighting or if there is another trick out there.

We use supplemental light during the shorter days and it keeps our egg count up. The only time we have problems now is when it's windy. Our birds hate the wind and don't lay on windy days. We also supplement feed with sprouted grain and greens from the greenhouse. Not sure if it helps with egg laying or not but the girls love it.

My girls have been molting so it's been pretty slow, but they are starting to pick up a little. Several are still molting though, they look pretty sad.
