***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Morning all, it is a bit chilly out there so bundle up if you have to be out. I am trying to read and catch up, Christina it was good to see you are getting out and about. Take it slow you will get there. Like MJ said you can't rush it. Taron seems like she has the chicken thing all figured out! LOL She and Nathanael need to compare notes haha. He was out there almost 2 hours just talking to his birds and taking care of them. Sadly mine don't get that when it is cold out. I am just not cut out for the cold anymore. Of course his are all in a hoop house with heat.

Egg production is finally up but we are having a terrible time with fodder all of a sudden. We had been growing it great until this last batch of wheat dh bought at the feed store. I think it is the seed, dh says it isn't so I am growing it in my bedroom now, lol. Kass I will have to look at your sprouting video and see if that is an option for us. My girls are not happy to be back on layer pellets 100% they act like I am misstreating them by not bringing them their green goodies!

What auction is this coming weekend, anyone know?
Newcastle Saturday and maybe Harrah on Friday

My Buff girls out pilfering through the cold stuff, they didn't think twice about charging out of the coop into the snow.

I just adore big fluffy hens.

Have I missed the New Year's Resolutions?

I'm going to train

abdos.gif
for a 480 mile hike, starting as soon as my pack and hiking shoes arrive in the mail, and then in the summer of 2014 (not this summer, but next), I'm going to hike through the French Pyrenees and then down into Spain, until I reach the cathedral in the city of Santiago de Compostela. The treck is approximately 480 miles. Here's a link to the route I'm taking: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_French_Way

If any Okies want to do a virtual walk with me, communicating online about miles walked, weight carried, etc., I'd love to have company. My sister is going to walk the zoo in San Diego, Balboa Park, and all those other tedious, boring pedestrian walkways

(I don't know how she's going to be able to stand it !!!!!) as a virtual partner during my training. I'll be training my DH how to take care of chickens and goats (it will take about a year and a half, so I'd better get started), but if he should prove an uncooperative student, I may need to hire a farm sitter for the month I'll be gone.

If you get the wandering itch and decide you want to walk through France and Spain in June/July 2014, I'll be happy to share a taxi with you from the airport to the train station.

Joe - Thanks for the information about tabletop shows. I need to find my calmest birds and work with them. Can an exhibitor have treats in his/her hand to keep the bird's attention while it is on the table?

Jcatblum - Prayers for your full recovery

. Taron sounds like a top-notch chicken enthusiast. Wonderful advice for egg production.
yes you can have treats in your hands treats are an easy way to teach the bird to stand and pose during the show

Don't have a pic, but my first 2013 babe is a paint Showgirl, hatched by its moms today! Not planning to incubate for awhile, and very few of my pens have hens on eggs.

I will have to check the broodie nests in the morning to see if any hatched tonight. One under a Cochin hen had pipped earlier today, but the chick wasn't cheeping. Moved the hen with the two 2012 chicks into a bigger cage with a hay floor so the chicks could run around some .

Looking forward to some warmer days this week. Need to finish a few pens and coops to house the breeders.

The gander attempted to take a hunk out of my arm when I let the geese out to freerange with the layer flock. ..left a nice bruise. He is getting a good look at the axe sooner than planned if this keeps up.

Kass, great photo of the pheasant and congrats on the win
Betsy and Guineaguy, congrats on the hatches

That sounds amazing!! You are inspiring! How does a virtual walking partner work? Just post miles walked? I highly doubt I will anywhere near what you do, but I love to hike and walk.
