***OKIES in the BYC III ***

I consider an olive egger to be a EE that lays olive colored eggs. People often mix marans with EE to develop olive eggers. Leghorns are white egg layers so there is a chance that the egg color could be much lighter than the egg you have now. I am sure whatever egg color the potential chicks laid they will fit in with your flock well. When you raise your own hatch you are there daily to help develop their personalities. Of all the chickens we have EE are the most flighty & most don't enjoy being held & loved the way some others do.

Got my hands in the dirt today for the first time in over a week, and it was good!!!!!! lol

Took me all day and a lot of rest breaks but I dug w/ the chickens, they missed me

thought of awesome plans for the newly empty bed the raspberries were in. Planted over 60 cuttings off my forsythia hedge for hopefully a free brand new hedge this spring

That doesn't sound nearly as much as it feels

Does anyone have an Olive Egger hen they want to part with? I bought a young one at an auction and she turned out to be a he - Ameraucana comb and feathered leggs. I just want one for eggs. I can put her with my breeding Cochins and know who's eggs not to hatch by color. I already have a sweet little EE in with them now. She adores my Mille fleur roo, Karl.

It feels like so long since I've been here. I lost a ton of favorite birds, I'm not going to do the hatching thing again. I seriously can't take losing them. I bought 9 Orpington pullets from Bill last fall and 2 of them magically turned into roosters. But they're so so sweet and I lost so many birds that I don't have the heart to place them (unless someone here wants one for breeding and not eating). Otherwise they'll go into go a yard with the 7 Orp girls. And I'll get some adult hens for the 2 boys I'd gotten the Orps for.
The majority of what I lost were boys, how strange is that? But I've still got way too many boys. Got a Brabanter trio from Poco and I love those birds! Didn't lose any of my 5 Araucana girls (thankfully), but did lose my Araucana boys. I'm just going to concentrate this year on roofing all the pens completely, and hoping for the best. No more babies, no more eggs and no more hatching.
I got a wayward unwanted female Cockatiel recently. Then I got a pair of ringneck Doves. My little Serama, Channing, is doing really good thank God. I'm going to stick with inside birds or chickens in fully covered pens. I did end up with the most gorgeous Brown Red Cochin cockerel though. The one I named "Lillith". I saw Lillith crow the other day so the last of my hopes of her being a girl were dashed lol Man, he's so awesome and huge. The Brown Red Cochin rooster OkRaceFan and I traded back and forth is gone also-Lillith's dad.
Robin, my Bantam Favs are still laying. They're one of the few groups that have stayed healthy, they're pretty isolated in a back pen, that's probably why. So let me know when you want eggs if you do.
Poco, the Brabanter girls started laying also-when it was 15 degrees out-yikes. This weekend I'm consolidating birds into less groups and getting caught up cleaning pens.

So Good to hear from you Mitzi!! I am so sorry for your losses- i think you may be onto something though, covered and enclosed so now wild birds have access? I have lost a few more and am going to hold off on any more for awhile, until spring at least. My large layers are doing good- hopefully that will continue-

don't stay away as long next time!

I understand, Mitzi. I didn't get on BYC for a long time after I lost 11 birds this past June. I still can't believe I don't have some of those birds, all three of my LF Buff Cochin chicks. I think my hen is 4 yrs. old now. I hope I get some chicks from her this Spring.
