***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Afternoon all, it has been awhile since I posted.I don't know if any of your remember me, I've been trying to catch up with the thread reading since christmas but I am never going to catch up with spring right around the corner now. I keep getting behind by the thousands of posts...is this the most active thread on BYC?

I kinda feel bad about jumping in and posting but I have a small chicken issue.

Since everyone here has the best taste in chickens and the most beautiful birds, I thought this would be the place to ask if anyone here had a home for some silkie roos? Just started crowing, darling hand raised fluffy wuffy little sweetums? 2 black, 2 (probably 3) white and one that is spectacularly barred/silvery splashy? Well behaved gentlemen, all of whom have been raised around kids and cuddled?

If anyone is interested shoot me an email.

Kelly

came home & found all my hens except 1 dead & my rooster only had 3 hens & rooster because I've had hawks & the neighbor's dog killing them. I suspect the neighbor & his dog cause chickens were just laying dead looked like they had ran all over pen & had bite marks. this is what happened to my others just have not seen the dog doing it. what else kills chickens in the day & leaves them layin?
I strongly suggest that you install a hot wire around your pen! I had my neighbors dog dig under my pen about a foot deep to get in and kill all my LF BBS Cochin hens a little over a year ago. i was given some natural stone that you put on a house and laid around the fence and then installed a hot wire around it. I ran two wires, one at 6" & 9" off the ground. I have not had any problems since. I told the neighbors if I see dogs around my pen that they will be shot!

For a hen that has not been laying long like yours I would say $15-$20 and the rooster $10-$15 of course if they are a harder to find breed then that will up the price. I recently sold one of my best pairs of birds and I charded $30 for the hen and $15 for the rooster. My Marans that lay the dark, dark eggs I sell pullets for $20-$25 each depending on their age.
Kathy, Do you have Blue Marans? Jack has a roo and 3 pullets and one girl layed the first egg of the year yeaterday and is was very dark like Black Coppers and Wheatens. I have a little pullet and Cockerel. I can't keep the boy and was going to sell them as a pair but the little girl is growing on me. Allready gave her a name.

got woke up about 2 am with what apparently was a skunk, found the tracks and heavy odor, been dizzy and sick all day- am thinking that is caused by skunk under the house??? can skunk fumes make you sick?
Both DH and I got sick from skunk fumes last summer. Our dog got sprayed and got into the house before we could catch him. The smell was horrible and I was nauseated and headachy for 2-3 days until we could air it out. We even had to get rid of our mattress because said dog laid on the bed (a big no no) while we were gone and pretty much ruined it. Nothing like coming home to a house full of skunk fumes...

Bird/Wire if you post where you are located that may help. Michael is always willing to take any extra roos. However Silky roos should be easier to place than an average roo. I promise my DD would beg & plead to bring one home if she laid eyes on it.

I agree hot wire is amazing. Makes all furry animals think twice!

Seen the lung Dr today. I failed my breathing test, he said right now that was more dangerous than my lung nodule. So more meds while we monitor the nodule. So in 6 wks we will see how things are progressing. On the plus side, no immediate surgery.
