***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Rain started about 5:30 this morning...at least that's when both dogs hit the bed and snuggled up. Red has been frightened of thunder ever since we had the big earthquakes. The sounds sends him into panic shakes so our bed became a vibrator bed. That wouldn't be so bad except he wants his head as close to your face as he can get it...kind of hard to sleep with dog breath. So I got up , took them outside for a quick potty break and now both dogs are in my recliner with me. Sheesh!
hope everyone is prepared for all the rain, ice and snow...stay warm and safe.
Red sure did hit the jackpot when he found you two!

brushy mountain auction , highway 59 north of sallisaw .. lol , subways district manager has been calling me wanting me to come and fill out paperwork to take over a store for them but idk if thats a route i want to again , and was talking to some people at the auction about it and they dont want me to go lol
nooooooo!!! Don't do it!!! I have worked in the restaurant industry since I was 16 until 3 years ago. If you sign to take over a chain store, there is a chance for profit, but little room for any freedom or creativity.

It looks like you have a lot of talent for down home cooking, and a good following. IF you do anything.... open something along those lines!

Robyn...... Great to hear that you were able to take care of the mites!

I plan on sprinkling DE frequently in my chicken house and run, once it is done that is. I hope that the DE will discourage any little critters from taking up residence.

It looks like we have a new family of rats living under that shed. Last year we had an infestation and nothing worked, except the poison. So I will most likely head to the feed store and get a few pellets to toss under the shed to see if we can curb the rats this year before it gets worse. Unless some one else has any ideas?

Our new chicken house I have elevated 2 ft on blocks so rats won't be able to hide underneath. We took advantage of the nice weather yesterday, and pushed to finish it as much as possible.
We were able to get the roof shingled, then wrapped it in tarps and plastic in an attempt to keep the rain out....

The girls have claimed it for their play house until the chicks are old enough to move in.

I hope to be able to dig high gauge wire into the ground around the chicken run about a foot to discourage rats from digging into the run. Some one said that running a hot wire along the base will also help because the vermin can feel the electrical current underground and avoid it. Has anyone heard this?

Here are the chicks we got from Atwoods Saturday.....

I think I got two BO, two Austrolorps, and Two Production Reds. But I don't know what the 7th one is..... Can anyone identify this one? My camera phone didn't pick it up very well... but it also has some brown at the top of its head.

I hope you all stay warm and dry, and are able to enjoy the rain by reading a book!

I feel bad for those in the North West part of the state. Yall stay safe & off the rds.
We have had almost an inch of rain, I wish the temps would drop already. I am so scared that the trees are going to be coated in ice & then we would have a HUGE mess!
I've got 4 wet dogs laying in the floor, the air is a mixture of old skunk & dirty dog. They have warm dry doghouses, but with the temps dropping I hate to leave them outside. Thankfully they are not scared of thunder, all 4 would never fit in the recliner with me.

once your chicks get big they will take care of your rat problem they will eat em & love it. I have a hot wire around my fence & it is keeping out everything that crawls under or comes close to the fence so far hope it keeps working. cute chicks I don't know what that brown chick is but if she lays eggs who cares shes still cute!

I have 3 dachshunds that hide in storms too they all climb in bed & cry everytime they hear thunder we get no sleep in storms

Chickens might take care of the problem inside the run.... but not outside of the run. And Rats are a problem here in Tulsa. There is a creek behind our house, and there is a vacant house 2 doors down with a swimming pool unmaintained. Plus we have a storm water system drain outlet into the creek behind our house pretty close to our back gate..... So this area is basically a campground vacation spot for rats.

My neighbors have already complained about us having a garden because they think we are the ones attracting rats, so I don't want to give them any more opportunity to complain when our chicks move outdoors and are pretty aggressive with preventing the problem.

Our two labs don't seem scared of storms. Of course they lounge on the couch all day anyways so it is not like anything is different for them. :)

We have rats the size of opossums. Chickens don't take care of them, but the dogs do & we set traps when DH is home.
News just said storm may come further south than anticipated. Watching patiently to see what the new path is.

Quote: Yes, he is 84 pounds of lap dog..lol. We adore him, but Gracie loves him. At 50 pounds, she still puts him in his place and cleans his ears every day. She would have made a great mother dog.

Our front pond that was reworked this late summer is just about to run over into the channel constructed for the back pond. Looks like the plan for the ponds is going to store lots and lots of water!!! Whoop! Whoop!
