***OKIES in the BYC III ***

I am trying to catch up but still have 8 pages of posts to read, not sure I will get caught up. We are definatly moving so we made a list of what we will move to town. I tried calling the city 3 times and every time left a message for the person who is in charge of "animal control" to call me back and nothing. But after driving around town there is a person across the street and over 2 houses that has chickens, two people with horses in their yards and one with 6-8 goats so we are taking the kids birds and a few laying hens that are special to us. The kids are okay with it now that they can keep some of their birds and Jackson the 8 year old is kind of excited to make a bit of money from selling some of his bantam buff brahmas. LOL Once we get moved and settled in the house in town we will start our search for land again. I want to find 5-10 acres we don't need alot but at the same time I want enough land I can have a garden and our birds. This years garden will be a container garden since we won't have room for chickens, 2 dogs and a regular garden. Also if anyone wants a good dog we have one that can not move to town with us. We are already taking 2 of the 4 dogs with us. We gave one away (and the darn thing found his way home a week later) and still have the other to place. He is part Great Pyreness and part traveling salesman. He is great with our chickens (basically ignores them) but not sure about other animals since he isn't around anything other than dogs, cats and chickens.

I miss getting on here and hopefully once we are moved and settled I can get back to reading everyday. I miss going to the auctions but chances are I will be taking birds to the auction this next weekend so maybe can catch up some then.

My guess on the brown chickie Ia a gold laced Wyandotte.
Robyn...... Great to hear that you were able to take care of the mites! I plan on sprinkling DE frequently in my chicken house and run, once it is done that is. I hope that the DE will discourage any little critters from taking up residence. It looks like we have a new family of rats living under that shed. Last year we had an infestation and nothing worked, except the poison. So I will most likely head to the feed store and get a few pellets to toss under the shed to see if we can curb the rats this year before it gets worse. Unless some one else has any ideas? Our new chicken house I have elevated 2 ft on blocks so rats won't be able to hide underneath. We took advantage of the nice weather yesterday, and pushed to finish it as much as possible. We were able to get the roof shingled, then wrapped it in tarps and plastic in an attempt to keep the rain out.... The girls have claimed it for their play house until the chicks are old enough to move in. I hope to be able to dig high gauge wire into the ground around the chicken run about a foot to discourage rats from digging into the run. Some one said that running a hot wire along the base will also help because the vermin can feel the electrical current underground and avoid it. Has anyone heard this? Here are the chicks we got from Atwoods Saturday..... I think I got two BO, two Austrolorps, and Two Production Reds. But I don't know what the 7th one is..... Can anyone identify this one? My camera phone didn't pick it up very well... but it also has some brown at the top of its head. I hope you all stay warm and dry, and are able to enjoy the rain by reading a book! Angela

Cold blowing snow and rain mixed today. Still not as bad as the weatherman keeps saying it's going to get. Hoping it will stay a little to the north and west of us so I can get to work tomorrow. Can't afford to be off. All the babies seem to be doing well still. Funny how we always lose babies early on when we have them shipped but don't lose babies when we hatch them. Kind of nice. Cats are going bonkers in this weather. My son got his Eagle scout award yesterday and was even surprised by his old scout leader (that he didn't get along with) who gave him a beautiful knife with an eagle carved into it and painted on the blade.

Getting tired of bad weather and my allergies. Haven't been able to get the new coop done which means we haven't got the fence moved which means we haven't got the new driveway concreted yet which means we are driving and parking in mud. No fun.

Well, its been raining since 0400 hrs this morning and the chickens are drenched. It looks like snow MAY make it McAlester later in the night. I hope my hens dry out before then. Egg production here has been a little poor lately due to the cloudy and dank days around here. I hope they pick up some soon!

Just sent out the equipment to start snow removal duty here in Enid. By the looks of it there will not be much time pass before N.W. Oklahoma is closed in from the snow. If you don't have to travel please stay at home where it is warm and safe. Right now the roads here are passable with patience and a light right foot but the wrecker services here in town are staying hooked up.

The company where I work is north of town a tad bit and the winds there were starting to howl pretty good, probably a constant 20mph with higher gusts and a snowflake hitting you feels like a snowball. LOL

Eagle is quite an honor with a lot of hard work behind it, Congrats

If you aren't having fun in that mud then you just ain't doing it right!! LOL

The locations that we have been working have been way wet, wet enough that the dozer has been over the tracks more then once but luckily it has always been able to crawl out to firmer ground.

Good to "hear" from you, Les. Was just thinking about you and Teva as I looked over my crop of showgirl youngsters. Hope those she bought at Shawnee have done well for her. I'm really getting a lot of nice ones. Finally the quality I've been hoping for. Am surprised at the proportion of showgirls to silkies in my pairings of the two. Expected half and half, but am getting quite a few more showgirls--in a variety of colors.

Be careful and stay safe!
