***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Hi all. I have a question maybe someone can help me with. I am having a problem with my hens roosting in their nesting boxes even though there are plenty of perches for all of them. On top of that, they keep pooping in them. :( We built 8 more boxes to see if that would get them out of the nests at night but they continue to do it. Some still lay in the original boxes but others are laying in the new boxes. Is there any way to get them to stop roosting/pooping in the nests?

Thanks!
Patti

I have the same problem with mine! I'm anxious to read suggestions.

Well, loading up some of my favorite chickens to take to the auction tonight. I have 8 hens that have not laid since the end of last spring. They are 3 years old. Hate to get rid of them but with the price of feed I can't justify keeping them any longer to see if they are going to lay again. Hopefully they will find a great new home and start laying their owner some nice new eggs

When I had that problem I had to go out every night and put them from a nest box onto the roosting bar myself for about 2 weeks. You must do it EVERY NIGHT to teach them where to sleep! It helps too if you can lower the nest boxes so the roost is higher- they prefer to sleep high. Also make sure there is enough room for them to all roost- if they are overcrowed then of course they are going to sleep in the nest boxes, too. Still have one or two stubborn ones but it sure beats all of them sleeping in the nest boxes!

i had the same roosting issue during winter months when everyone was combined in one coop , i just figured it was to so many birds in one area , even tho there was plenty roosting roo and when i seperated back into the breeding pens they stopped roosting on the nests ... but idk the actual reasoning for the roosting issue was just a assumption on my part

Hi I have 12 in the incubator they went in to lock down yesterday I just checked on them and one is cracking the shell on the wrong end and I am wondering what to do

Unless I have a broody between now and then I won't start any eggs to set until the week of Ap 15th. I am exchanging eggs w/ an out of state BYCer then so I will set the eggs I get from him and add my own eggs to fill the incubator. The same guy I got the egg from that became Mensa.

, well not chicks...but coturnix quail and cayuga ducks....I didnt know you had bantam ams
