Brown Red / large fowl. Since his dad was a BR and he was bred with a Splash or Lemon Blue hen he should be called a Lemon Blue. If I breed him with Lemon blue I am not sure what color would hatch.OKRacefan - What does BR LF mean? Chester is beautiful! Is he also BR LF? If he breeds to the Lemon hen, what colors would come out - or would the colors 'mutt up'? Thanks and sorry for all the questions!
Thanks, that is Jaxom he is a Fm NN that carries the scaleless gene from the University of Arkansas program. Love his crazy comb makes him look so comical.Lovbe all your pics! That hen, in the dust, is taking a "Spa day". Who is the roo with the amazing comb?
Update on the chicks hatching today....6 in the brooder now and 7 more pipped.
I did get a pen 10 chick out and another is zipped...so the Black Birchen Wyandotte rooster that died was able to sire chicks. CW and Blue Cochin chicks are hatching. I ususally candle before moving eggs to the hatcher, but this morning was a rush since they were already hatching and CW can respond poorly to temperature changes. So far those are pipped and zipping.
I quickly candled the eggs I was hoping to hatch.
CyuseRanch....There are 4 Pen 15 eggs in the hatcher and all four are moving in the egg....so you should get a good % on those eggs you set for the hatch-along for Easter.
OKRaceFan...What will your Lemon Blue roo produce over Blue hens? hmmmmm? I'll have several pullets available this fall.
Hearts4animals...the black chick does look like Minorca....I have several hens and they started out that way....
Arrrgh! Its been one of those days. Last night I jumped on an add in craigslist for an incubator...it had been posted for mere minutes! It was a redwood incubator! I emailed the guy and we arranged a time for me to come see it. I had asked questions and had gotten a photo. I started to get really excited. But when I called this afternoon for directions - was told that someone had already come and picked it up!
It was no fault of the folks...they had thought that person was me.
I feel like someone had just pulled it out of my hands.![]()
Oh well. I will get over it (at some point). Maybe there is a better one for me around the corner somewhere down the road.
As it turns out, since I had no incubator to go and pick up, I did a second check on a cow that I thought had calved. She wasnt quite right so I brought her in to the vets and it turns out that she had had a late term abortion but was unable to pass the calf. Not that she couldnt have waited another day to have it pulled...but was better for her to get taken care of sooner than later. If more than a day had gone by, there would have health problems for the cow.
So that was a silver lining....but even it was tarnished...of course, the dead calf. It was a hiefer (or would've been) and was colored every bit as sparkly as her older brother had been.![]()
Oh well... weekend is here and the Newcastle auction is tomorrow... something to look forward to!
You have some great pics. I love nature photography. I am happy for spring.
