***OKIES in the BYC III ***

OK! Looks like today I am able to post pic again...

Since you all were talking about planting......here are a few pictures of my chicken house yard and also of my dove house.

This inside the Silkie pen...large gourds hanging through the chicken wire top. Makes tons of shade!
Clunked my head too many times to admit!

This dove pen with "sleeper" from semi truck [hubby is a trucker!"]
This a purple bean Hycinth [spell?]

Silkie pen on outside. Talk about shade!

sorry these are out of order, I'm just proud I got to post them at all!
Silkie yard start of season

Dove house and pen.
Gourds are fun to grow and make lots more than you will ever need, I make bird houses from mine and I noticed that Kathryn does also.
The birds love them. I have wrens all ready this yr.
A few yr back the gourd vine got over to the trees and grew over 20 ft tall and gourds were hanging waaaaay up there in the tree. Looked like a "gourd tree!!!"
Otherwise you can "train" them where you want.
love the gords

The gord shade is awesome. I hope to do a similar thing w/ morning glories this year since my run top wouldn't support the weight of the gords. It is a run for babies so it is shorter too then yours.

i would like to grow some vineing plants on my run but i do not know if i can my run is half in the goat pen lol and what ever i put there the goats might eat.

Super excited.

I finally got my first guinea egg of the year. It was tiny but it went straight into the incubator, cant wait to have those goofy little guineas running around.

Has anyone ever tried to ship chicks to another state? What is the survivor rate? I have a family member that will pay for shipping if i'll mail them. Also is there a place to go online and see the steps and prices for mailing? I was just wondering about some others and their luck? Thanks for helping out?

I am going to put some eggs in the bator in the next couple of days, can't wait to see what pops out, it should be pretty easy to pick out the baby daddy considering how diff. my 3 boys are. lol

Jarvis ships birds, just dnk if he ships chicks. I have had multiple boxes of chicks shipped to my place. Most are just boxed with the occasional heat pack. The ones from GFF had that green gel they sell for chicks to stay alive in shipment. I will say the chicks loved that gel, but they sure made a mess!

Donnie, I am WAY jealous of your delivery. Still waiting for Bambi to kid & been watching her for a wk. It has to be soon, my buck was panting so hard at the fence kids joked he may pass out. He smells those hormones changing.

Love the gourd shade on that pen! We're planning to do something along those lines this year too. It will sure help when the summer temps roar up to unbearable heights. Of course today we are just wishing for a return to the temps of the last week. It's freezing up here, even in the house. Going to have to break down and turn the heat back on. Funny, I ran the AC in my bedroom two nights ago it was so warm. Ha. Only in Oklahoma.

Well, once again the people that called to buy turkeys didn't come by. This is the second time they have said they would be by and haven't come ... and they are the ones calling us, not the other way around. What's up with people now days. I don't care if they buy them or not, but don't keep me hanging around my house all day waiting and then not show up.

Garden beds are going great. Got the squash planted in the straw bales and they seem to be fine so far. We'll see how they do over the next couple of days in this cold weather. I think I'll have to stick some bottles of hot water in with them at night to see them through.

This is why I LOVE selling at the auction. It isn't worth my time to wait around & entertain everyone that stops by & wants to spend $10 on chicks. It turns life upside down. Everyone has to stop what they are doing, if kids were doing school work it is almost impossible to get them going again. Auction doesn't always bring top dollar, but it often is the easier route.
I am not against people stopping by, just hate our day being turned upside down.

Finally got my potatoes, cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli in the ground Saturday. Also got 2 apple, 2 peach, 1 plum and 1 cherry trees planted. I planted 4 fruit trees, blueberries and grapes last year, but the extreme heat last summer took them all out. I have always wanted to plant fruit trees and bushes but never have because we always had plans to build a house and move out to our 60 acres. Reality finally set in last year after we lost our business, life savings, our 60 acres and had to file both business and personal bancruptcy. We have been in this house for 23 years and will probably be here another 23 more. So this year I plan to plant all those things I have been wanting to plant but never did. I got tickled at my son who came for a visit and was helping me plant trees this weekend. He wanted to know why I had made the garden bigger and was planting fruit trees. I told him I was trying to become more and more self sufficient and lead a more natural lifestyle. Not sure he understood the concept but I'm sure some day he will.
