***OKIES in the BYC III ***

sorry about the losses, i lost our gray duckling today, not sure but i think the dog spooked the ducks and she got trampled- so frustrating- on the one with one wing, once she adapts, i don't see why she couldn't be reintegrated, do you have her on any meds? meanwhile, these kittens need homes- pretty pleeze...LOL! get a load of the one on the upper right... and jet the serama is quite the daddy
No I don't have on any meds besides vetercyn and poly vi sol. Should I and if so what?

Any feedback on the orschelen poultry swap?

That's the one this saturday in Pryor? I was thinking of going and taking some roos. I've never been.
I went to the first swap in Pryor I think it was in February, it was pretty crowded, lots of birds and friendly folks and now they have a food cart, too. Need to go back once I have birds sorted out but probably not until next month. If you've just got roos I wouldn't expect to sell very many though, we sold one of the 7 or 8 we took. The nice thing is that it is only about a 35 minute drive so it's one of the closer ones to me. There is a Facebook page for them at https://www.facebook.com/groups/401652983250871/

On no I am so sorry

I lost one of my best egg layers the other day to a dog too. The dog also injured my second best Rosie. Her wing was barely hanging on when I got to her. Thank god for who ever invented vetercyn. I sprayed it on her and she is doing better but the wing is dead. So unfortunately I had to cut the rest of the wing off.

So my question can she keep living with one wing. She is such a good bird and has still been laying eggs for me in the quarteen area. And will I ever be able to put her back with her friends and boyfriend?

Yes if the shock doesn't kill her and infection doesn't set in she can still live a long life and lay pretty eggs for you. BYCer ChicKat had a pullet that got it's wing pulled off by a raccoon and she eventually recovered and began laying, even brooded and hatched some chicks before another marauding raccoon got them all. You might PM her to find out what exactly she did to treat the wound.

Thanks for the feedback! :) we have a duck that doesn't have any eyes, she pretty much got her whole face pecked off by turkeys. She is fully healed up and lays almost an egg a day. And has no problem eating drinking and bathing.

Robin - John named the cats! I don't have any good pictures yet... They move around like little steam engines.
This is Therese.

This is Agatha.

This is a spectral cat...i.e. cat moving too fast for my point-and-shoot camera.

That last one should be called Ghost!

Looked out the door early last evening to see a coyote in the chain link surrounded garden, five feet from the gate looking intently at the pen of juveniles. He then went back out of the garden and around to the area out front of the barn and was going to get a grown chicken out freeranging. Roger got a bead on him as he crouched between the farm implements but the critter took off like a shot south under the gate to the pasture and over the hill. I found a little blood on his trail out, but the way he moved he wasn't mortally wounded...he'll be back. Since it was daylight, I'll be keeping a close watch on the layersand won't let them out to free range unless we are home. We have never had a yote brave enough to come that close to the pens or the house.

We are setting 4 H posts to day to hang some gates for an older neighbor today. His wood post gates washed out by his barn and hay enclosure. He temporarily fenced off the openings to keep his cows in his pasture. Roger and his brother welded the H posts up the other day and hopefully the ground will be dry enough for us to drill, set and concrete in the posts.

Two broody hens sitting on eggs will have hatches this week. I gave them eggs due on 6/6 and 6/10.

Never is there a day on the farm that there isn't a job to do.
The rains have really done a number on the run by the barn and the pens. Roger is going to bring up some sandy dirt with the tractor scoop so I can fill in where runoff from the barn has trenched the length of the run. The other pens need a high center to force the runoff out of the pen areas so that needs to be hauled in with a wheel barrow and spread. And the lot in front needs some fill dirt in the corner and back by the squeeze chute.
Then the garden has a few more raised beds that need weeding and I need to prep the ground for planting the okra. Also need to run the weed wacker around the perimeter of the garden and around the fruit trees and then spray the garden with bug spray for the potato bugs and baby grasshoppers....they were even on the cucumbers and eggplant!
I have juice from sandplums that I put up last year that needs to be made into jamelly. Sure glad I put up extra because there won't be any sandplums this year in our area due to the freezes. May not be much other fruit either except for some pears and a few peaches...the trees lost fruit to freeze and hail. Wild blackberries are blooming and will have fruit ready in a few weeks. The elderberry bushes are finally up and will have later fruit.
And we still have the windows to go back into the rent house and limbs to cut that are hanging over the new roof. Looks like we will have an older couple (70s) moving in next month. She is the younger sister of the older man and his wife who live across the road from us. So we will probably keep that 2 acres mowed for them.
And there are cows to check and....

Hope everyone has a good day!

So sorry about the losses to dogs.

Vetercyn is really amazing. Just one treatment saved my neighbor's rooster that had his comb torn down to the bone.

I am struggling with a decision today. My husband had a mini stroke 3 weeks ago. On his 1 week check with his Primary after he got out of the hospital, he finally had the mole on his face I have been concerned about biopsied. Results came back today that it is melanoma. We go to the specialist next Thursday to see what all the options are. His Primary told him to make sure to take me to the appointment with him because we will have to make some difficult decisions that day.
The decision I am struggling with is whether or not to downsize my flock so he does not have to help me so much with chicken chores. But on the other hand, he likes helping and most nights we sit outside and watch the chickens while talking about our day. Just not sure what to do. He would tell me to not downsize to keep all of them because he knows how much I like the flock I have now, but I don't want him to be burdened. I guess I should wait until after his appointment next week and go from there.
Anyway, thanks for listening....
