Actually, weren't you one of the folks who brought pie to POOPS?

Thanks for posting the link to the article...nice read and generates some ideas.

My sister purchased one of the first underground homes built in Oklahoma. It was encased in concrete like an open front box. It was cool in the summer and warm in winter. Problem was the builder put soil and sod on the top for a roof...as the original degins instructed. The home developed black mold and she got really sick. Gophers also dug into the seal around the steel beams in the roof line and the bedroom ceiling collapsed spilling dirt on the boys bed.....big mess. Insurance was realllllllyyy hard to get because there were few comprables at the time. And when she sold it...same problem. The buyer actually gutted the inside and cleared off the top, sealed it with some kind a rubber with a sloped roofline and used it for a garage for a newer traditional home built on site.

The one shown here is great...traditional roof, open front and windows for ventilation...a much better design.

I have a great recipe for pickled beets. I make pickled jalepeno relish with carrots, cauliflour, onions and garlic.

We fried green tomatoes just as they are turning pink...ups the acid bite....yummy

20 or more years ago M.E.N. had plans for a small workshop/greenhouse that was heated by compost and fresh animal manure stored under the benches. I haven't been able to find the plans for it since then. That along with a solar collecter would make a nice winter coop for the birds.

I remember that article too. Mother Earth News and Organic Gardening magazine gave a lot of us great ideas in the "old days". We deep litter our hen house in the winter. We use bags of leaves added each week. The hens scratch this up, crushing the leaves and mixing these crushed leaves with their poop. The heat from the composting leave/manure mix helps keep the coop warm. In the spring, we remove the composted mixture for the garden.
