***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Rain is keeping me inside today. I've been working on lesson plans, and my eyes are starting to cross.

Does anyone speak Chinese? I've ordered a CD from China that has instructions for castrating farm animals. There is a section on chickens and ducks that I'm interested in having translated. I expect to get the disk in the mail in two weeks. Maybe I can find a translator through Craig's List.

I'm going to be selling nearly all of my flock so that I'm only keeping a few laying hens and raising cockerels in batches for caponizing. I'll be taking my extra birds to the sale in Stilwell on August 2, if I can confirm that there is an auction on that date. I'm in the market for barred rock chicks (males only), RIR male chicks, or black sex link male chicks. I want to avoid orphingtons, marans, and australorps. If anyone on the thread has an overabundance of little cockerels, send me a PM. I may end up buying batches from a hatchery if I can't find anyone who's interested in selling a bunch of boy chicks for cheep, cheep, cheep. >(")

Coral,
Our local married vet couple adopted a boy from China a couple of years ago. Their middle son is majoring in Chinese in college right now. Might be a good place to start. Edmonds Vet in Morris (918) 733-4525.

Thank you lonnieandrinda. I have heard of the sex links but am not exactly sure what they are. Do they have the real large brown eggs?

I will check with my husband about it. Sorry it took so long to answer, I don't get online every day.

Patti

Sorry Patti, as I didn't hear back from you they are sold pending pickup. :( If it falls through I will send you a PM.

ETA: PocoPollo I will be setting up for sexlinks late this fall when I have more Cream Legbar pullets at point of lay, they will be Black Copper Maran roo over Cream Legbar hen. If you are interested we could maybe work out something advantageous for both of us. I would be glad to hang on to them for 1-3 months and get them to you a batch at a time.

I am deathly afraid of needles. One of my roosters was in need of an antibiotic shot today so I went and got everything I needed. I psyched myself up all day long about the needle. I had the rooster in my left hand, found the spot I was going to inject and just as I almost made contact with his skin my husband said "I sure hope you don't kill him". I was done after that. I held the roo out as far away from my body as I could, turned my head as far around as I could and gagged as my husband gave him the shot. I'm such a sissy!

Kass...love your description of your broody hen. We have 15 Wyandotte girls that are broody..some on empty nests, one sitting on a rock, one on a golf ball, several on eggs. Then there are three girls that are trying to share raising three babies and two Blue Cochin girls sharing raising 15 Cochin and Wyandotte chicks from the incubator/hatcher.....so no, if you can't break her, give her some eggs and keep an eye on her. If the heat returns, you may need to give her a fan.

Critterwoman...brewer's yeast...depends on how quickly your birds empty their feeder. On the 13 pound feeder....sprinkle a 1/2 tsp of crushed powder to the feed in trough around the feeder twice a week. I prefer to mix it with yogurt, spread it on either a tomatoe slice, cucumber spear or a hunk of watermelon rind and let them go at it.

5acrefarm...so glad to hear you are enjoying the CW. I thought I saw one in one of the photos you posted this past week. I really enjoy the personality of the CWs. I have several pullets that are just at point of lay. When I come into the pen, they will squat for me the stroke them. One pullet I've named Tiny Dancer because she will squat like a curtesy and then dance around my hand. Then she starts cooing noises and she will face me so I can slip my hand under her chest and lift her to my shoulder. Now eye to eye, she practically purrs as I drink my coffee or check out the other birds.

That sounds awesome. I'd be looking for batches less than 8 weeks old, though. I can even take them day old or week old. This is worth some thought. The goal is to acquire groups of male chicks, so the sex link is perfect.
