***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Rinda...so is the city making you reduce your flocks or are you thinking you don't want to move them to the new property when you find it? Why not keep those that make you happy!

could someone here temporarily care for them until you relocate?

No they are not saying I can't keep my chickens, their words were that I cannot raise poultry for resale (a commercial use of a residential lot). We had been planning to look for a new place in 6 months to a year anyway so I think it is something I COULD fight I'm just not sure I want to.

But with 4 small children, a lot of unfinished projects at this house, and a house that will probably need much more secure coops built than what I have right now, the sensible thing to do is lighten the workload with the chickens. As I already have Cream Legbars that lay blue and it appears I will not have time to show this fall like I wanted the best thing to do is get out of Ameraucanas and get rid of all the "extras." Then I can sell the coops I don't want to move and put everybody else in together since I won't be hatching anymore. Believe me I am keeping my favorites, the better Cream Legbars and all the Isbars are staying.

I have a realtor friend looking out for us. We are hoping this will be a really good opportunity as interest rates are still low. We have a 1350 sf house on 2/3 acre right now, hoping to get more like 1500 on at least 2 acres more out in the country. I've shed all my tears already over the stress of the situation and am ready to buckle down and get this done. That's how I roll!

SAD STORY: We are now fighting the City of Catoosa to be allowed sell our chickens and it looks like we will lose because our side of the street is in city limits. Their words- "you cannot use a residentially zone property for a commercial purpose."

Across the street from us is not city limits. We are allowed to have the chickens but we cannot "raise poultry for resale." Geez, I get that they don't want me to create a poultry farm, but I only have about 30 adult chickens, in clean well cared for breeding pens. Yeesh. If they knew we were selling honey and bees they would probably take issue with that even though of our 25 hives only about 8-10 are here at home.

We were about 6-12 months out for looking for a bigger place anyway, this just moves the timeline up. Went and looked at a few properties today that are definite possibilities but nothing we love yet.

So my loss can be someone else's gain- I am selling all of my Ameraucana stock (show quality blues and blacks) $25 apiece. I have a black rooster, a 1 year old blue rooster, 3 blue and 3 black hens. Some hens are about 10 months old and the others are about 1 1/2 years. I also have a brooder full of black chicks and a few blue chicks $6 each straight run, 1-5 weeks old. I will have two more hatches after this.
If the restriction is on raising for the purpose of re-sale then change your stated reason of ownership as hobby / show stock and the sale of birds is only the un-desired breeding results which provides for a completely different purpose all together.

Whew! Spent another full day helping my sister in law work in the garden at my MIL's home. With all the trips to the hospital she made with Another brother for chemo and radiation, the garden got little attention. We weeded, tied up tomatoes, spread compost around the roots and set in hay as a final mulch. Then, pizza for lunch, and I spent several hours with limb lopers tackling the out of control Seven Sisters rambling rose. No one pruned it over the past three years and it was way too overgrown. Made lots of headway, left enough DNA for a murder scene, but I won the fight.

But I bet the rose looks at it as just a temporary setback, whatever you do don't let it see Little Shop of Horrors!!!! lol

THANK YOU that is PERFECT for the interim. That's exactly where I am now that I am done hatching for the year while we look for a spare place, and I still have lots of extra birds I am going to have to sell.

Some very nice people just came and picked up six guineas I'd hatched for them. A couple of days after they hatched, one lone silkie hatched, so I put it in with them. A couple of days later, another hatched and joined them. In a few days' time, a total of six silkies hatched. When their guinea keet brother/sisters were taken away, the oldest silkie chick cried and cried and cried. It was joined for a bit by one of the others, and has just quit crying. I knew they formed bonds, but who would've thought the one would be so upset?

I've invited them to come to the get-together in Tahlequah, and as that is where they live, I think they'll come. They both sounded excited about it. I actually only met the husband--his wife and I have been emailing back and forth for several months about keets.

They've ended up with more keets than they actually wanted, as they also ordered from one of the major hatcheries--pretty colors only. They will be selling some of them, so if anyone is interested, let me know and I'll pass it on to them. If they still have some left by Labor Day, I'm sure they'll bring them. They have slates, violets, buffs, a chocolate or two, whites and several of the blue varieties.

Update for our Labor Day Chicken Gathering: We will have beanbag toss games for the kids. Do I need to paint numbers next to the openings on the beanbag board? I think I do. I'm working on the boards this weekend. We will also have a few boards with cutouts for faces so people can take an event day photograph. I've only finished the sky on the first face board. I'll post a photo tomorrow when I get the heads, ears, necks, etc. painted.
