I ordered my shade cloth from GreenHouseMegastore.com and it was $2 per "linear" foot for 12 foot wide 70% green shade cloth. I will use scissors to cut it to the length of the pens I want to cover and since it is 12 foot wide, I should be able to pull it down about a foot on each side of the pen and fasten it. I went ahead and bought the plastic grommets and my "testing" of them leads me to believe they will hold tight, provided I can get the fabric stretched down to the chain link I want to fasten to. I also plan to try fastening it with D-rings to see how that works, since those are really easy to use with the special pliers.

Hopefully, I will see you at Newcastle tomorrow night. It has been awhile since I went to that auction. I don't know if it is a good thing or a bad thing to have so many poultry auctions close to OKC

Robin, Captain carries a single copy of the barring gene.

ummm...i'm clueless on genetics... so is that part of his coloring then?

Yes. If you look closely at his feathers, hackle & saddle & maybe tail too, you will see some faint barring. So, his offspring have a 50/50 chance of having the barred pattern, if the female doesn't have it.

Evening... Or should I say almost good morning?

Jason and I just got done with sheet rocking the ceiling to our room... and put of one sheet on the "wall".

Noticed this evening that the winds from last night blew down my Coop Expansion... I realized I needed longer wood screws than the size I was working on

BUSTER: You are correct when left to tend to them selves the animals will do good in reference to cooling them selves down.. We noticed that once we moved all the chicks from the cages and let them run amuck in the nursery pen with the ducklings and baby turkeys they did great... each bird has buddied themselves up with either a bird of their kind or the other. I think total this season(not counting the eggs) we have lost two chickens to the heat... and that was way back in the begining when it first was starting to heat up... since then they have been alright... just the eggs...

And to answer the questions... them darn hens continue to lay on the eggs regardless if there is a nasty one under them or not... so we have to do the deed of clean up.. and believe me I wanna give them girls a darn bath ...

Mine have been fine, but I leave them out to fend for themselves too. As long as nothing eats mine, the weather hasn't gotten them.

Of course, "as long as nothing eats [them]" when you're talking about chickens isn't that long.

Traci

zip ties would probably work with the knit shade cloth. We used those in the grommets that are on the blue tarps and the metal grommets tore off, leaving the zip ties still attached to the chain link fencing. I am not very impressed with the cheap blue tarps for shade, at least if they are in a vertical location where the wind whips them back and forth, since even if you punch holes in them to keep them from ballooning, once they start ripping it is like ripping up woven fabric and it ravels. Most of my pens are wrapped in either chain link fencing or chicken wire on top of cow panels, so it shouldn't be too difficult to find a sturdy wire to attach the shade cloth to the fencing.
