Would hog rings work for attaching the cloth, bunch it up a little and clip the hog ring on the edge!!! I use hog rings for attaching wire to tin and such when ever I can, lots faster than baling wire, but you can't beat good old fashioned baling wire for tieing gates closed, aint found a coon yet that can untie baling wire!!! I have a lot to get done today, hope it don't get too hot too quick today!!! Have a blessed day yall!!! Lynn

My birds are doing better than I am - I like the idea of NanaKat to use fabric as shade cloth. I have bolts of it that will never get used otherwise. I do plan to attach "professional" shade cloth to the tops of some pens tomorrow. We already have tarps on the ends of pens to help provide sun block from the West. It is still 98 degrees here - at 8:30 in the evening!

I made rings from bailing wire that would pierce thru the fabric and could be tightened with a pair of pliers. I used a 1/2 inch dowel, wrapped the wire around the dowel. Slipped the spring off the dowel and cut the rings with a pair of wire cutters....each ring was a wrap and a half....carry over from my jewelry making days. The rings were cut at an angle so the ends were sharp. Worked like a charm.

I have lost only two young ones in the beginning of the heat too. I have shade cloth over each pen except for one in the shade. I put grommets on two of them and they aren't too bad to put in. I tied them to the tops of the cages with zip ties.
On the large pen I bought 2, 40'x6' lengths, sewed them together, and stapled it to the top boards. It seems to do better that I expected in the wind (but it cost nearly 100.00 though!).
I hose down the tops of the pens and cement and ground around the pens in the hottest part of the day. So far so good. I am a worrier in this heat when it comes to Cochins.

old*cowboy :

Michael you going to Mary's tomorrow. Be awful hot. Talking about beagles. My son just lost his today that we got him when he just turned 6. He is 18 now so he had her for 12 years. We just noticed a couple days ago she was starting to have trouble seeing. He made an appointment to take her to vet today and went out to get her she was dead. I hope when he gets out of college he gets another, we killed a many a rabbit over those beagles while he was growing up.

Sorry to hear about the loss of a faithful companion. It sounds like she went out on her own terms - I know your son and family will miss her.

Great information on making attachment rings. I hadn't really thought about how to attach the fabric. I wonder if D-rings, like you use in building cages, would work. The advantage of the "professional" shade cloth is that it is knit so it won't ravel out.

i put 75 and 80% shade on all my pins for shade about a mounth and a half ago you can git some gromets for the shade matireal that works well and don't cost much if you give you birds plenty of shade they will lay better and grow faster in this heat not to minchun would you like to be out in this heat without shade ???? your birds don't ethere please be kind to your birds give them shade

i would add some jugs of ice for them to snuggle when its really hot- they seem to appreciate it, i moved the younger birds inside for the next few days - don't want to lose them- saw how the ducks got out.... won't work in this heat though

Well, I had my first loss yesterday. I let the chickies out for a bit and ran inside for a min. That min. turned into about 30 when I was sidetracked by my two year old. I also didn't realize that my hubby had let the dog in so the chickens were alone out there. When I remembered them, I ran out to check on em and couldn't see them anywhere. I called and they didn't come running like normal. I found 4 in the coop hiding, then 5 more under some wood on the other side of the yard. All that's left of the 10th chicken is a poof of broken feathers in the middle of the yard. There has been a hawk eyeballing them for the last two days and I think I gave him the perfect opportunity. I have learned my lesson too. They won't be let out again unless I'm with them. I'm trying to think of a way now to cover the back yard in bird netting...or something to get rid of that stupid hawk!

Hello everyone, hate to butt in but would anyone happen to know where I could get pullet chicks close to the Tulsa area?My sons silkie turned out to be a roo and he crows all the time so I have to get rid of him and find a hen to replace it with, thanks:)
