***OKIES in the BYC III ***

All you in OKC watch out for my lost darling husband. Knew better then to turn him loss by himself, my bad. But at least I think he turned back around and will find Carla before night fall. That man can get lost in a mall or a pasture.
Also good thing he doesn't read hear much.

Nice pens, NanaKat. I don't think they look like a homeless person lives there, just happy chickens.

Prince Wilhelm looks like he's found some buddies in your flock!

I've been thinking of ways to provide more shade for my birds, too. They have a pen that I made earlier this year that I've moved to a shady part of the yard, under a mulberry tree. The other day I laid plastic sheeting on top of it with landscape timbers on top of that and a section of leftover fencing on one side to keep the rain out, but the rain never came. Now the pen looks shabby, but serves it's purpose for now. I put the smaller girls in there at night. I like the idea of shade cloth, though. It would be much sturdier and more protective than the thin plastic on there now. If I get the gumption today, I may go out to look for some.

Thankfully I haven't lost any birds yet. They free range during the day and are good at finding the coolest spots in the yard. They've dug out holes in the shadiest places in the yard under some trees, and I change their water a couple of times a day. I took your idea and have given them frozen fruit. They love that! I feel guilty when I come into the air conditioning while the chickens are outside panting all day.

I have heard if you attract a crow / raven to your area they will drive the hawk away. They eat eggs, but not chickens. Several people have posted they leave an egg out just for the crow / raven. But I don't know the details.

My Purple Martins do the same thing. I haven't had a hawk near the pens since I put up Martin poles and have many nesting pairs.

Don't forget about Mocking Birds as well, plus it's fun watching them scare the crap out of cats too. LOL

Another fast and easy shade for birds are cut tree branches with the leaves still on them, cedars work well. Kinda like a thatched roof.

Old fence panels, pallets or plywood works too.

Don't worry, we know that if you want him to know what you said, you will tell him yourself

He finally made it here! Loaded up 77 young turkeys and 2 frizzle chickens and headed back home (I hope)

I told him to get back on I-44 and follow it East.

Gerald isn't good with directions either

But now he has a GPS feature on his new smart phone. I just hope he can figure out how to use that smart phone
