***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Sigh. Hatched out 13 baby ducks last Sunday. They were all doing great and then yesterday came.

Yesterday we lost 5 meat chickens (3 weeks old), 6 baby ducks, and my male silkie who was acting completely normal yesterday morning but was dead by supper time. Ugh. Meat chickens I don't fret too much about because they are such genetic freaks, it's amazing any of them survive but we've never lost ducks to anything but a predator so I'm guessing they got too cold. The silkie I am just stumped by.

Our girl silkie, who shared the same pen, is doing great but understandably puzzled now.

So very very sorry to hear that. It can be devastating. We lost one last night - but somehow she didn't make it back inside the coop last night (didn't close it up until at least 2 hours after dark) and froze to death. sigh... But at least I knew what happened. I hope that you figure it out and everyone else stays well!

Bad news. Yesterday one of my landladies ranch dogs got into my coop while I was in town and mutilated and killed ALL of my chickens one at a time. Not the dogs fault its owners who dont control thier animals. I have thirteen assorted in the bator. Hatch day Dec. 1st. they will have a dog, coyote, racoon proof coop. I raised them all from day old chicks. I lost it!

So sorry to read of the losses. We've all been through it one way or another, but that doesn't make it hurt any less. Hope you have a good hatch.

I was exactly in your shoes just a few weeks ago, came home to a mutilated flock, my only survivors were broody moms and their young ones fenced separately.
