Do you eat any of your birds? Might seem like a strange question.I time my hatches for the shows I attend, I need the males to be at certain ages for the show. I like the males to be 10-11 months for cockerels and 13-14 months old for cocks, I like the females at 7 months for pullets and 10-12 months for hens. So I hatch males early from certain matings and females later also from specific matings. That gives me more of what I need for each show at the right age. The problem is figuring out what shows I want to hit a year in advance to plan it all out. The extra males and females from matings that were designed for them as well as the ones that are just not timed right end up with different roles to play in life.
I'm coming to Shawnee if @shelbydog and @Kyzmette will give me a ride! Whee!
Sorry to hear you are sick...~~I can't seem to shake this sinus infection. It goes away for a couple of weeks then is back again. Guess it just seems like it is gone anyway. This is round 3. Maybe it is time for the hateful "A" word.
Just goes to show you... Never give up!!!
Shawnee is mainly a show but is also all the above... It is heaven for chicken folk!!!Oh that sounds amazing!![]()
Is it just for show birds? Or is a buy/sell/trade/pow-wow kind of thing?![]()
Planning on being there Saturday, early.. My DD birthday is Saturday and she is not interested in spending her day at the chicken show.. So we are going to have dinner with her Saturday night...As far as I know they're EEs, so anything could be in there. I have three chipmunks now, and the blonde and brunette, so five fuzzybutts total. I was hoping for one more, but that egg didn't make it.
What makes you think they're female? It would be interesting to follow them and see if the Legbar traits hold true.
Now, who is going to Shawnee this weekend? Shelbydog and I may be there, and it would be great to meet everybody! Cathie Sue, are you going?
So looking forward to seeing you Saturday, Betsy!I'll be at Shawnee. I'm only showing two birds but am bringing as many silkies and showgirls as I can. Most are show or breeder quality, several colors including self blues and paints. The paints, of course, would have to be shown in All Other Variety as they haven't been accepted into the standards. I'm pretty sure showgirls, as "naked neck silkies" were accepted into the standards this last weekend. I think probably only whites, and maybe blacks and buffs. haven't heard for sure yet.
@cjarvis there's a thread dedicated to people who pull eggs from free range chickens out of the fridge and hatch them. I think there's even a Trader Joe's hatching club for people who buy their eggs and put them straight from fridge to incubator.
Guess they don't sell ball gags for guineas, huh??? hehehe!Yes, I think he is so beautiful and would get more guinea but my neighbor is too close for the volume. I think the chickens are tired of his loud mouth too since he is in the big pen with them.
Abueleta's is great, 11:30 is a wonderful time...Yes, we have a lot to talk about. Bet you do well with your birds!
We need to talk up meeting for lunch.....the past several years we have met at the Mexican restaurant on I77.. . Abueleta's. I think it was around 11:30. They have plenty of seating.....
Go Early!!!!Okay, so somebody knowledgeable in this Shawnee show-thing please fill the rest of us in. Do we need to be there early to have a shot at getting some of the sale birds? Do the sales start later? Shelbydog and I aren't showing, but we'd like to maybe pick up a decent breeding bird or two.
I don't think you could even get a decent sized taco out of one of Carl's birds...Do you eat any of your birds? Might seem like a strange question.
I know some bantam Cochin breeders eat their culls and say they are quite tasty. Male Cochins are about 2 lb. and females average 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 lbs before processing but your bantams are smaller than that. (I can't bring myself to eat my own birds but if someone else would want to I think I could be ok with that.)
