***OKIES in the BYC III ***

No
I raise silkies and Ameraucanas. I am adding more of both currently. A wheaten color soon from MJ, and I am getting some more lavender hatching eggs. My silkies aren't to point of lay yet and I just got more Silkie chicks today from a breeder up in TN since I'm here for the holidays haha I have a chicken addiction.

How many chicks did you have to order? I am not allowed to have many - well, I am actually not allowed to have any... :0)

I have a mature hen and a young rooster that free range with a large fowl flock during the day. They are dark colored, and there is plenty of ground cover. I've had no problems either with the other chickens or with predators during the day. Worst thing was nasty critters reaching in through the wire holes and grabbing wings or whatever the could and pulling them off. (this happened partly due to the silkies preferring to pile against the pen side on the ground instead of perching. The two birds I mentioned earlier somehow manage to reach the higher perches just as well as the other birds - how they do this - I have no idea. Silkie magic or something.

If you come to the auction, I can give you (maybe) a couple of fertile eggs. I have one silkie laying. She is lavender (self blue) and the rooster is a nice porcelain (or self blue cream). Today's egg was the last one into the incubator. But if we get one Friday and Saturday - you can have those. Her eggs are fertile. I know that two is a really small number, but if you want them, they are yours.

My girls are so devastated right now I am afraid to try to incubate again, but if I can get down there maybe I could. Where in Newcastle is the auction?

@I-love-my-honey are you sure your eggs were fertile? Did you get them from somebody with an active rooster, or do you have an active rooster?

I do not know if they were fertile. I bought them online, so had to trust the seller. I was just desperate to get some started and have them hatch around the 14th when I pick up my chicks because I could not find anyone who would only sell two or three chicks and ship them.

You need to take the second Newcastle exit - not the one that goes west by the walmart - but the one that goes through the town to the east (or south). It is in the ffa building on the main street right after the park with the Christmas tree on the left. Past the second light, before the third light.

I know!!! I had to cancel plans to get more birds Saturday afternoon after I got the diagnosis.

Sorry you are not feeling well and are going to miss the auction..

LOL, actually I don't feel that bad other than the sinusitis I have too. The coughing fits suck but this is like a walk in the park compared to the bacterial respiratory infection I had about 2 years ago...now I was miserable with that. I feel fine to work but doctor said I needed to stay home and let the antibiotics get to work.
I have had both within the last couple of years and it sucks.. Threw my back out during one of the coughing fits...

Sorry, forgot who was looking for them - Kyzmette?
I sent that link to MJ.. It is a really good price but is a bit of a drive.. Too bad it was not posted early last week, we were down that way visiting relative.

Talk about scaring the pjeezes out of the birds in the yard. Bringing an ostrich into the flock would definitely put my two geese in their place... Toulous and Sophia would would either coward or be in cahoots with an ostrich...

The auction is at 5:00 and is off the main road (HWY 62) on the east side..

Boomer Sooner!! Did anyone watch the Sugar Bowl? Had to cheer my school on, such a great game!
Whoot! Whoot!!!

@muesky

Ouch at throwing your back out from a coughing fit.

The ostrich chicks are hilarious. Can you imagine getting one and asking poco pollo to caponize it. At least with an ostrich you get eggs, meat, and boots! Safer than owning an alligator, I think LOL.

Shipped eggs are a big gamble. Not only do you have to worry about the quality of the eggs and the honesty of the seller, eggs go through a lot of damage in the shipping process. Start with something local to incubate and you'll have better luck. My first batch I only got one chick, and it failed to thrive and died after a week. I had no idea I would get so emotionally invested in my first hatch and I cried like a little girl when that chick died. When you hatch a dozen chicks and have poop-cleaning mastered, then try hatching shipped eggs. You won't be as stressed, you'll know what you're doing, and you won't be emotionally attached to eggs that have a much lower hatch rate.
