***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Yayyyyy! I just hatched.

Thank you, all you Okie BYC's. I couldn't have made it this far without finding this thread. It's very difficult for me to post or even socialize anymore. I want all of you to know how grateful I am. If I ever sound criticizing or even offended, I'm not.
My oldest daughter called a little while ago and I told her I was actually on a forum. She said, actually, one of the reason's she called again(she had called earlier, too) was because she has been so worried about me not getting out anymore. She would love to move here, but she tried it once, and she couldn't find meaningful employment around here, so she commuted for a while. It was really too much for her. I loved having one of my grandchildren here, (I have 12 and 7 step grandchildren). She's the only grandchild I have in OK. I have a son that lives outside of OKC, and when he got divorced she took the kids to Colorado.(MY daughter got divorced and came to OK, from Colorado)
My granddaughter is a poultry person. All animals really, but loves the chickens. We've decided when she's old enough we'll try to get her some show chickens. My daughter seems serious about it, so maybe I'll get out more.

I honestly wouldn't blame you for not getting out. It's COLD!

I don't get out often either. If I do I am either with my husband or I am going to church, going to one of my kids things (daughter in Irish dance and son in Karate), and now I am getting out to chicken things (soon). I have a group of girlfriends I use to socialize with but we all just haven't gotten together on days that are convenient for me... so I don't see them much anymore. If you are on this forum then that is a great way to talk to people who share a common interest. It's a great way to meet others then later meet sometime...

For a second I thought you were talking about eggs, and I was thinking, I didn't remember you talking about setting eggs, then I realized what you were really talking about! lol
LOL! I thought the same thing. Then I noticed what she was talking about. LOL!

Was just on Greenfire and must say that y'all's pockets are waaaaayyyyy deeper than mine. I know that many of their chicks are reasonably priced for 50 a pop, but I would LOVE to see some of those black birds. So if any of you go for the 5k needed to get a pair - let me know - I will pay an admission fee to help offset the cost just to get the chance to see one.

X2

It's a good feeling to break out of one's shell.
X 2^2.... I was also thinking eggs, then saw the avatar thing.
Congrats on your achievement...so much better than chicks! (and you know that almost nothing is better than chicks)
Does that granddaughter that likes chickens get to spend much time with you? (ironic about the Colorado/ok swap!)

I totally agree. unfortunately I don't always do as I should. By the way Kassaundra, did u see the NN for sale in Checotah? They want to sell all for $5.00 each, but you have to take them all, unless it's a rooster. I was going to call, but there is no way I can buy over 30 more chickens. Especially, this time of year.

Since I haven't figured out how to do more than one quote yet, I'll respond by name. How would any of you like to be weird and stupid?

If you select the "multi" button at the bottom of each post you want to quote and on the last one select the "quote" it will allow you to quote on all the posts you chose... Hope this helps

How do you like the Cochins breed? I would love to have a few of those pecking around. The feathered feet and fluffy body... do they get very big? I might get a few when you order unless I find some that are already in driving distance...

Here goes another cold night! My birds have gotten oatmeal yesterday then today with chopped up pear or apple mixed in. I threw them some raw broccoli and tomato basil toast. They ignored the toast so I guess that isn't a very big hit with them. Trying to get creative to what I can put in the oatmeal so its not so bland...

edit: Does anyone have any Sweedish flower hens available? I am looking for one or at least two pullets or hens. Also in search for light Sussex. I can't seem to find any breeders around here and would like to try to not have to hatch my own... I have little cockerels I already will have to find homes for. Any info is appreciated!
I love cochins, especially LF cochins.. I have found that the LF cochins seem to be more laid back and since they are so big most other breeds leave them alone.. Cochin rooster fights are really pretty funny.. They flare their neck feathers at each other, bob up and down, give each other stink eye, while posturing than it is over...

I am so excited to get my son's Partridge Cochin! I just worry a bit about another roo of any breed. Right now I have 27 birds, all of breeding age. 3 are roos, 1 Light Brahma (dom male) 1 EE (I think will be dom male when he reaches full maturity) and 1 SSHamburg (I adore that flighty guy!)
My new babies will have 2 roos of 11 (1 Buff Brahma 1 cochin), So that will make my ratio 5 of 38 (crazy chicken math, I was supposed to have 1 of 10 see how that works.......

)

What are some of your ratios?
Depends on the breed, as to what ratio you will need..The lower the gene pool the more rooster to hen ration you are going to need.. I have found with my LF cochins I do not have more then 4-5 hens to a roo just to ensure my fertility.. Bourbon Red turkeys I keep at the same ratio..

I DO!!!! Please let me know when so I can throw in my order with yours. I don't know if you want to just meet up and get money for orders or how you want to do it. Just let me know! I for sure have some that I would like to order!

I was on facebook and thought I would share this link:
http://www.takepart.com/article/2012/02/21/are-brainless-chickens-solution-animal-cruelty It is about how they have an idea to just make the chickens in a coma while they are raised for our own consumption to keep up with supply and demand. This is to be more "humane". Its really sad!

Then I came across this photo I thought all of you could relate to:

@hotcultr I know exactly what you mean. My mother has some mental illness issues, so I grew up learning the kind of social skills that make school as a kid pretty isolated. I'm fortunate I have made fantastic friends over the years, but my natural tendency is to want to seclude myself. Years ago I realized I would be my mother if I didn't fight that, so I force myself to do what I call "friend maintenance", which just means maintaining a healthy friendship by spending time together. I don't always want to do it, but I know I will be a happier, better person if I do.

You should come do chicken friend maintenance with us some day soon!
