***OKIES in the BYC III ***

I guess I'll have to make the trip out there, spent a lot of time looking at the Atwoods near me and they didn't have any :(

Farmers feed in sapulpa prices in 50 lb bags: whole wheat $11.50; cracked corn $8.60; whole oats $11.90; whole barley $15

I like farmer's feed too. But I live in East Tulsa now and Lees is so much closer.I do not mind. I like Lees feed too.

There is also a feed store on Yale. I think it is just North of Pine or Apache. Just south of Hwy 11. I think it is Tulsa feed or Tulsa Farm and supply. They also have whole grains that can sprout. Would that be closer?

can you use oats? I think i saw a bag of whole oats at my attwoods the other day.

Sprouting fodder is not the same as fermenting. After the initial soak whole oats can sprout just fine. I would not sprout just oats. But you can mix oats in with other grains to sprout.

TaraBella, the broken feathers on your girls are from a rooster. The roosters grab the hens by the feathers on the back of their heads to hold onto them while they breed them. Their toenails &/or spurs dig into their sides and backs and break those feathers off in those places, too. Some hens allow the roosters "liberties" more often, those particular hens will be the ones with most the feather loss. They make hen aprons (check on Ebay) you can put on them so the rooster doesn't tear them up so bad. Some roosters can do major damage if you let it go long enough.

Well. After the holidays we are back to our daily homeschooling routine which means I can jump in here and say hi again!!

Nice to see a few new peeps, and a few coming back to say Howdy!

You all had such interesting coversations the past 4 weeks. It was fun reading and catching up.

Nana... post some more Norman pics please??

@artsyrobin I followed your "cockeral/pullet" issue on FB. You really have done amazing with helping that poor thing. God bless you!

I can't remember who started the "I'm a wierdo" coversation. But I just wanted to say, I grew up in public school and didn't date out of choice untill I graduated. All 3 of my girls are homeschooled. My oldest is just 14 and she knows that she won't be able to "date" for a while. Which she is just fine with because we keep her busy with schoolwork, and chores, and 4H, and church activities, volunteering at the food bank, and etc. I have a feeling as long as we keep encouraging her chicken loves she won't mind a bit until it is really time for her to marry.
:)

We are still chickenless. But in the works with @BetsyOK to restart our flock. We spend the time the last 2 days thoroughtly cleaning out the chicken coop and tomorrow I will be adding field fencing to to perimeter of the run to make it more secure against any dogs or preditors.

I am looking to see what else to have in our new flock. My last flock I had orphs and austrolorps and loved them because they were such great egg layers. B ut I would like to have egg layers with a little more color. Still deciding.

Nothing else to report from my house.

Have a blessed night all.

Oh thank you

! I was stumped on this one, but that does make perfect sense because I have never noticed it until recently, and my EE roo has started sneak-mating

.......Big Jack puts a stop to it if he can!!!

So covering is about the only prevention then? I can't quite see my girls in aprons, especially those RIR's, boy are those girls testy

might consider wynadottes and cochins too... gorgeous birds and sweet.

sonny got 2 foot treatments today and seems to be eating, drinking alot- trying to get weight on him/her, but wouldn't eat scrambled eggs...?

I don't know much about ducks but would doubt it is any more of a stressor to bring her in to take care of her. The bigger stressor would have been catching her w/ a net, and since you don't want to put her through that again to treat her I'd say keep her safe where you can easily treat her.

This is a question for everyone actually but I pulled this down because I think it could be related. I'm telling ya, if its one thing its another this past week!!! My lav orp cockerel that was having leg issues is fine with his legs now. Figure it was an injury or the vitamins worked. So now his face is swollen and his eyes are teary. I looked up cocy.. oh shoot I cant remember the name of it but I wrote down some things that I could give him to treat it. I just don't know what YOU all would give him. I have never heard the names of the things this scientific site listed (like speaking another language). I just need to know where I can get it and the name of it. Heres a pic of his poor little face. Oh the poor boy!!! I need something I can treat ALL of my flock! Especially the bantam pen!

Poor baby! He is in a crate in the garage along with the frizzle in a separate box. He was NOT happy. The frizzle I think is happy not to be pecked on as everyone was pecking on her constantly. So much that her head is almost bald.
I promise that I am a very clean person and these things just sprang up when the neighbor kid brought his sick birds to me. I gave him back his sick birds when I saw they were sneezing and drainage but kept the frizzle and put her away. I thought since all my original birds came from him it would be ok. I never thought he was so careless and passed it off as they have a "cold". As if it was nothing. Ugh!

Definitely respiratory. Best to treat your whole flock. Sometimes this comes in with wild birds robbing food from your feeders.
Best advice I ever got for treating the whole flock came from CJarvis. Get a pig feed with oxytetracycline and feed it for two weeks. It comes in a small pellet like layer pellets in 50# bags. I found it at Shawnee Feed at 177 and Hardesty Road. You can keep treating the single bird like Rinda said.[/QUOTE]
Do you know what brand of pig feed? Hubby sid he should have thoght of that because he used to feed the young pigs a started that had tet. in it. Our feed store carries Shawnee products as well as many other brands, but didn't have the Shawnee. Hubby bought 2 50 pound sacks of MoorMans that has clortetracycline. I told himOTC. Anyway, it's already been dumped in the feed cans. Will it be good enough? I about croaked when he said it was $30.00 a bag when we're supposed to be on a budget. He said it's wel worth it not to have to catch everything and treat.LOL As u know ducks and gese are messy so puting it in the water was not an option Isthis al we feed or do we ad it to our ration? They didn't sem to hapy about the taste.

try spraying his feet with vetrycin, if you have any, or even rubbing neosporin on them, it may give him some relief, could also be a fungus, pics will help

on the orp- it is possibly a nutrition issue, is he thin at all?
my ducks are not tame, but when i have had to bring them in they settle down pretty fast- keep us posted
Thanks on the info about your ducks. She has settled down although she sure is chirping in the morning. I had talked with Dr. Herin on Tuesday and he gave me some good insight. Still giving her pen injections since that is what we started with. She layed 2 eggs and seems pretty bright. My keyboard is mesing up lots and I have to kep going back to ad leters, so I think it's time to change before I post anymore

Quote: i don;t mind hen or roo- as i would like eventually to have a pen of large cochins- i am trying to figure out getting some weight on sonny too, need to go through my files to see what i have saved- this is one from nnbreeder

"" This amount feeds one bird""
Feed the birds three times a day for three days a mixture of
This mixture is what you will need for the entire three feeds…. It is not 3 egg yolks and 3 teaspoons of honey etc…. divide the contents into three
½ to 1 x egg yolk….. give the whites to the other hens mixed into their seed or pellets (depends a lot on the size of the egg yolk)
1 teaspoon honey…. .given for energy
2 x tablespoons yoghurt…. Given for calcium and also to make the bowel go back into normal production after this upset
Only use the plain yoghurt never the one with fruit or extra sugar in it, not good for the bird
¼ teaspoon calcium powder (if you can’t get the yoghurt)
3 to 4 tablespoons rolled oats…. To give substance to the feed, or use chicken crumbles or layer pellets but soften them with some boiling water first
Sprinkle of multi vitamin powder (only if you are not already giving it to them in their drinking water, don’t overdose) just a few grains will usually be enough for this size mixture
2 to 4 table spoons of apple sauce or grated apple, it must be grated not chopped up for ease of digestion
Mix to make a crumble mixture not runny

Speaking of chickens with more color. It is driving me crazy, what type of chicken is that on the home page banner that scrolls for Chicken breeds?
can't find the scrolling banner....
