***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Good for you!!! I wouldn't either

It isn't their only food, they get crumble too, but i have an old stockpot i fill in the evening for them, that group there are 17

Then i give a couple scoops to each of the other little groups- 4 in one pen and 5 bantams in the tractor, and any broody and chicks i may have- almost afraid to count!! Oh, and the guineas sneak in to get some too, so i replentish every nite- lets see what chicken math has come up with

26 outside, 16 refugees from the cold inside- seramas, silkies, 2 broodies- my goal in spring is a couple more tractors from todd @CustomCoops - it gets real noisy in the morning!
Oh my goodness!!! Lol. I bet it gets noisy.

Does he have a website? I want to build a chicken tractor, but I don't know if I will have time.

I am considering getting an old baby play pen from the thrift store to use to keep the Silkies inside in. I don't know if my hubby will allow that, but I am considering it. :)

It's 11 degrees this morning.

I hope we see a little sunshine soon. I'll be watching our youngest daughter's babies on weekends for the foreseeable future. She's been asked to work a weekend shift, so It's going to be easier for everyone if the babies stay with Granny. I'm still covering electrical sockets and putting small objects up out of reach. It's been a long time since I've needed to baby proof the house.

Anyone going to the Crozier auction in Checotah on the 31st? I need to figure out how I'm going to keep two toddlers corralled and entertained. I've got a lot of re-learning to do.
It's 7 degrees here. I feel the same way...

Everyone's water was a block of ice. I'm so sick of this weather. Temps are up, down, up, down, up, down...

makes me crazy.
You will have your hands full! Hopefully they will be entertained with the chickens but with such a short attention span its hard to keep them content. Lots of toys... maybe some apps on the smart phone if you have one... if they watch tv you can find things on youtube for them. The technology was a blessing when it finally came around with my third. She just turned 4 last Aug. and she will finally sit and watch the chickens but still wants to play puzzle games, matching games and whatever else I have on my phone. My oldest are 8 and 11 and they have a Nook and so the are instant zombies at auctions.

Oh please PLEASE tell me we will have some warmer weather soon!!!

I really like that this one is so close. It really is within driving distance.

However. There is no email contact I can find. And the last time the blog was updated was in 2011. I can't even find it on FB. So I do not know if they are even in business still?

There is a "contact form" on their website and that's it, probably forwards to their e-mail. Their pages mention it is "winter laying season" so it sounds like it could be current, they just don't update the blog anymore.

I would be comfortable getting chicks from them but not hatching eggs, I have heard several people reporting they ship eggs that explode in the incubator way sooner than they should even for regular bacterial infection (meaning their eggs are old when they ship them), one person it was two orders in a row. :(

I am still "newer" to chickens. But I am glad Igot my first chicks last year from hatchey stock. That way I could figure out what I like. I really LIKE them ALL. But there are some I fell in love with. I love Orphington, Astraulorp, Dottes. I want one of each, plus the Sussexs I'm ordering, and maybe a Welsummer. We are also getting 2 silkies. those will be in a separate mini coop because those are for 4H and our project is going to be trying to sell silkies.

True... if your kids are in 4H.... you can actually rent an incubator from them. Call the OSU extention office. I think it is like $10.00 for an incubator. But you have to have it back in my mid Feb because they start the Embryology program in March.
If your kids are going to show 4-H, then there is a good chance that they will need a Trio to show. Plus, if you are going to raise chicks - since they would only lay a few eggs a week - you want more than one hen laying so you can get a good amount of eggs into the incubator before they get too old. imho

You know what I JUST remembered? I bought that Silver Phoenix hen at the Coweta auction.... I wonder what happened to her?

Quote: he's on facebook and here as Custom Coops, i just put his page on your FB page- this is my coop as a Christmas present from Coral

technically the silkies could have been outside for the winter if i'd had the coop and run ready, but i ran out of time, my plan in the spring is to get a couple more of these for them, so i won't need a repeat next year...LOL!

Thanks.

Yes I would LOVE to have a trio. But we just don't have it in the budget to buy 3. Even though @BetsyOK is being very gracious with her pricing on this pair. My hope is that I can get a really nice pullet chick from a hatch from this pair. My understanding is that you can breed Daughter back with father rooster and it still be ok. If not, I will get a 2nd hen hopefully from Besty later on.

I really need a trio anyway because I have 3 girls. Human girls. And each want a silky.

I'm inspired by all your wonderful pictures. I pulled out my camera and was playing with it when I saw these ducks. We have a small storm drainage creek that runs behind our house. And every year we get this pair of ducks making their home in the creek. When the weather heats up and the creek dried they move on, probably farther upcreek where there is more water.

I think they are so pretty.
