Thank you everyone! This is the BEST thread! My little hen is restless but doing fine. I plan to de-spur my teenage EE as soon as I can, probably Wednesday. The other girls seem to be weathering his attentions for now, I'm not sure how the one girl got injured so bad, but I suspect that big Jack (my L Brahma roo) tried to stop the mating and my poor hen got the worst of it! I truly do appreciate the tips and kind words, I just felt so bad that she got so hurt by that darn fellow

! This is my first full year with chickens and it has been quite rewarding and a bit daunting! I am fully addicted though and plan to get my first 'bator as soon as I get my income tax LOL!

I have goats for sale. Wha t are u looking for?
Poor baby, She looks like she's taking it ok. I sent you two emails. an extra on Valbazen brcause I didn't think he gave enough info on it
Awe poor girl! My 5 year old did the same thing a few days ago when he fell off of the couch (not sure how he managed that one). Luckily the mouth heals SUPER fast!

Emily's an inspiration, Robin. That's the same breed as my little rooster who's probably going to lose the bottom of his leg.
Rinda, I remember reading you're not supposed to use the kind of penicillin injection that has "caine" in the ingredient on chickens. Course if you were talking the oral kind it wouldn't apply. I'm actually not using anything on the 2 I've got with frostbite. They're on a thick layer of small flake shavings and I wash their feet every few days to soften them. I'll make them a nice tractor for summer but they'll be inside in winter.
I wouldn't put them on shavings at all for a bit, even the small shavings could get in the wouds? using old sheets for Sonny, looks like he lost his other nail today, no nails on that foot at all. I don't think antibiotics would be really needed unless you see infection setting in. I have used Pen-G on my birds with no problem. I got emily after the loss of her legg, so i don't know what treatments were used.

Lost my Dot this afternoon, she had been going downhill, no weightloss, just quit eating. She was one of the older hatchery girls, so maybe that had something to do with it, one of the upper tier girls, so when i noticed her hiding in a nestbox to sleep, figured something wasn't right with her. Her comb turned very dark and she had crackly sounds from her breathing?

I brought a listless goose in tonight. Going to treat her with Pen even though I don't know whats wrong. I'm trying to figure out how to make a diaper out of old suspenders and baby diapers I still have on hand from the grndkids last visit. Ithought she'd do better if she could sleepwith me since geese are such gregarious animals.

House chickens are fun... But, seriously, I hope she doesn't lose that foot. :fl
I had my Corronation Sussex, with the frostbit feet put down, Allthe toes on one foot were black and dried up and the other foot was almost as bad. He was starting to not walk plus he had a reoccuring rattle that even tylan 50 couldn't cure. Since he was a large breed I didn't think it was fair to even try to see if he could walk on stubs. He was such a sweet bird, I feel so bad.

That looked like it hurt! Hope your little one bounced back quickly after her fall. My kids have bloodied their lips so much. Our 4 yr old still has two left feet and falls gracefully. Always getting a boo boo but occasionally gets up and dusts her hands off then she's back to playing. So sad when they get hurt. Also your hen looks really relaxed! I love giving them foot soaks when they have a soar foot and they just melt into the water. Lol! Its cute. @Robin: I tried to get some pics and the best ones I could finally get after chasing the two cochins around (they arnt photogenic) were the best I could get. This one is much larger than the other. This one likes to stand tall and ruffle the neck feathers at the other. Brat. The smaller of the two. This is the one that has the frostbite on the feet. I haven't heard any crowing, no eggs but the bigger one has clucked alarmingly like a roo. I don't know..:idunno [/quote] I think, from the way each is posing their head, you have one roo and one pullet. LF Cochins are tricky to sex til they either crow or lay. :)

Neighbor Jack is still healing up and hadn't seen his birds much in a while. I occasionally bring a bird in his house for a visit.
One of the game hens that run in his back yard has been jumping the fence and is sitting on 14 eggs in a nest under a bush right by his front porch. So Jack can just pull back a curtain at the front window or open the front door and see her sitting 5 feet away. Silly hen :)
