***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Ksane...do you use Frontline on you chickens for mites? Or was it someone else?

Rinda, I just cringed when I saw you little girl's lip....one of my grand tots fell two years ago putting his front teeth thru his upper lip requiring stitches. One of his front teeth died and was pulled this year. He is three. Hug her for me.

Candled the eggs in the hatcher while keeping my fingers crossed after the power outage Sunday night. Babies are jumping in the shells! Only tossed one that was an obvious quitter. The hatcher dropped to 80 degrees and the incubators dropped to 90. Will wait to candle the incubators until Friday since that is my regular candling day.
Yes, I use Frontline. You can get it generic on Ebay and it's really cheap. I did order abottle of the Frontline Spray last time. It is labeled for chickens, but I got the one labeled for dogs. Same exact ingredietns in the same amount but cheaper.

Robin, I'm sorry about Dot. I've still got a hatchery Silkie boy-last one left-from 2 1/2 yrs ago. He's one of my favorites. It sounds like Dot had a good run at your place.

MJ, That's sad about your Sussex. But I would have to do the same thing if it were a big breed like that who couldn't walk :-(

Oh, anybody want to adopt a goat and a shearless black sheep? My mother cares for them and she's getting to the point where it's difficult for her. When she's in one of her bad moods she won't bother telling me if she doesn't feed or water them, so I worry about them.

Quote: Wish I was closer to you or I would take you up on one of them. I was actually in Springdale then Bentonville last week getting eggs. Pretty area but boy was hubby unhappy that I had him drive 1 1/2 hrs to pick up eggs... then "surprise I need to go meet another person while were up here!" 1/2 hr to get more eggs... then 2 hrs to get home in time for the kids to get home from school. I just told him it was a good road trip to spend some quality time with each other

. And I got my eggs; BONUS!!!!

I wouldn't put them on shavings at all for a bit, even the small shavings could get in the wouds? using old sheets for Sonny, looks like he lost his other nail today, no nails on that foot at all. I don't think antibiotics would be really needed unless you see infection setting in. I have used Pen-G on my birds with no problem. I got emily after the loss of her legg, so i don't know what treatments were used.

Lost my Dot this afternoon, she had been going downhill, no weightloss, just quit eating. She was one of the older hatchery girls, so maybe that had something to do with it, one of the upper tier girls, so when i noticed her hiding in a nestbox to sleep, figured something wasn't right with her. Her comb turned very dark and she had crackly sounds from her breathing?

Robin I am so sorry for the loss of such a pretty little hen. When my "Adele" sex link with vent gleet quit eating and drinking her comb fell over and went purple on her last day. Breaks my heart thinking about it.

ote name="TRUE5" url="/t/501128/okies-in-the-byc-iii/50790#post_12720670"]Oh boy. Teenage roos... I will be heading there soon. Not ready for the teen years and their drama.
@Rinda: Ooo! That looked like it hurt! Hope your little one bounced back quickly after her fall. My kids have bloodied their lips so much. Our 4 yr old still has two left feet and falls gracefully. Always getting a boo boo but occasionally gets up and dusts her hands off then she's back to playing. So sad when they get hurt. Also your hen looks really relaxed! I love giving them foot soaks when they have a soar foot and they just melt into the water. Lol! Its cute.

@Robin: I tried to get some pics and the best ones I could finally get after chasing the two cochins around (they arnt photogenic) were the best I could get.

This one is much larger than the other. This one likes to stand tall and ruffle the neck feathers at the other. Brat.

The smaller of the two. This is the one that has the frostbite on the feet.
I haven't heard any crowing, no eggs but the bigger one has clucked alarmingly like a roo. I don't know..

I think, from the way each is posing their head, you have one roo and one pullet. LF Cochins are tricky to sex til they either crow or lay.

They are pretty hard to sex! I look at pics on the internet and try to compare but I'm at a loss.
Oh... please excuse the mess in the second pic. I just noticed I hadn't picked up the bowl I gave them oatmeal in this morning. Lol. Recycled bowls work good for my girls/guys.

Random:
Tonight I saw some Langshans that belong to a fellow BYCer... but I never see her on this thread. She teaches the kids' 4H in our area. Any way, I never realized any chicken breed could be as large as those were!! The boys were only 6 mo old and HUGE

!!! I didn't know chickens could get to that size. Just thought I would share my amazement for the day.

@True5. Bet you are talking about Mikaela.

I'm joining the messed up foot club. Found a bantam fav hen this morning having trouble with her left foot.
I am. She was so gracious to show my kids and I her chickens. She let my two oldest hold her young Langshans and it made my kids look small. Awesome animals!
Hope your little hen's foot gets better quickly. Poor thing.

Three questions:
Can anyone tell me how to stop a chicken's diarrhea? I'm not sure which one it is but boy it is nasty light brown nastiness
sickbyc.gif
in the coop this morning. They are all on layer crumbles. Have supplemental vitamins in the water after they were on the antibiotic for so long. I did feed oatmeal yesterday and day before... hope that isn't what caused it but kinda hope it was so I know how to stop it.

EDIT: Anyone know someone who sells English Orpington eggs? I can't find anyone in driving distance by google.

Also, decided I need to buy a bator instead of borrowing off anyone. If you have one laying around after you upgraded or just don't plan to use it ever again let me know. I can't find anything on craigslist that isn't less than two hrs away. Ebay might be how I go but just thought I would check with you all first. Thanks!
Right now I have 60+ eggs going with five different hatch dates... Going to need one just for hatching. Can't wait for babies!!!

Can anyone tell me the best place to buy hardware cloth or wire to build coops and runs without costing an arm and a leg. Thanks
I got mine at orchelens, might check farmtek.com, not sure on shipping fees- it is pricy

Doggoneit, so many losses. I'm so sorry Robin. Your Dot looks like she was such a sweet girl.
She was an ornery girl, NH, don't know that i'd get another, but she was a feedstore rescue, and independent as can be-

Blech, after looking at lots of icky pictures I found a BYC thread that looks almost exactly like my hen's foot. So frostbite it is. Looks like she will probably lose some toes but hopefully retain most of the foot.

you aren''t alone in the club this year- how is it looking today? With Sonny he has sheets for him to stand on, instead of litter, foot soaks and spraying with vetrycin since apparently the boy is ticklish, neosporin rubs were fine till i got to the pad and then he'd squirm

since they were on antibiotics, put some acv(organic) in the water to replentish the good bacteria in their system, the antibiotics strip them of good bacteria- the oatmeal is fine for them
