Did you see the one about the "Finger Cleaner"??? *** Warning*** This video is not for the weak of stomach...

I have read quite a bit on this. It is mainly thought to be genetic or that the parents are too closely related... Not sure if either are true but I have read enough research reports to lead me to believe this...

From experience, it is the chase that sets your dog off. The problem comes if he accidently kills one then they will become food to your dog.. Pyres are especially stubborn dogs and once they get it in their head it is very difficult to break them of anything.. I used to raise Pyrenees but since my place is not huge and is fenced I did not want to deal with dog who I could not keep in the yard...

I usually always wear a chicken or POOPS shirt.. Last auction I was wearing the POOPS shirt from last gathering.. We used to set up a table in the back at the auctions for BYCers but stopped after some of the other old timers quit coming...

To me that is just a cop-out of people not taking responsibility for their dogs.. My suggestion is call the sheriff. That way if you ever have to shoot the dog, there is legal record that the owner was warned..
Once I started calling the sheriff when I see a neighbor's dog running loose for days, it was amazing how those people all of a sudden were able to figure out a way to keep their dog contained.. Truly amazing!!!
Maybe we can come up with something.. For auctions that know us, which most of them do, just go up and ask the people running it who the BYCers are and they will point us out..

I am not officially an English teacher but have taught Language Arts over the years and am a writer. Admittedly, I tend to be a bit snarky about grammar, when it is a professional writing or something along those lines..
It was beyond disgusting!!!!!!!!!!

Diana, what kind of animal call....a scream...like a big cat? Hope it stays far, far away. Taking a break from working on the taxes...thought Id post a few pictures. Looked out the window the other day to see this....a tail sticking up out of the brick carport planter wall.... Dottie decided she would become an excavator... and her look when I caught her.. .Me? What am I doing? Why I'm digging a nest! Found an egg in there yesterday morning. And then today....chickens out freeranging start running when I come out and then follow me into their pen for a little scratch.
So cute!! What breed/s do you have there? They are so pretty! I love all the fluffy butts in the air!
Dottie is a Columbian Wyandotte...no feathers on her legs. The chickens in the flock photo are Columbian Wyandotte, Birchen Wyandotte, Blue Wyandotte, Black Wyandotte, Blue Cochin and my Cochin/Wyandotte cross breed. They were out free ranging all the way from the road back to the equipment parked behind the garden. Yet, they come running if the call goes out "She has a bucket!".

Quote: No problem-i think it is a really hard thing- i have never liked chaining dogs and i struggled on this one, our dogs are dump dogs, they were not trustworthy around livestock at all- i had considered rehoming them- they were chained 24/7 - this was the first year i had chickens, Buddy killed a cockerel and and i was devastated- so... about 6 months later we start losing birds, 6 chickens, all but 1 duck... so i decided they needed to earn their keep- i would work with one at a time, getting them to accept the chickens, walking with them when the chickens free ranged etc, took all summer, but they finally understood- the female has never quite got no chasing guineas- but she usually likes to run past them and startle them, so she is off when buddy is hooked up- if they are off at the same time, they love to try to herd cattle, the neighbor doesn't appreciate it and i don't blame him, so that is how we have had to do it. Since then we haven't' lost very many, maybe 1 a year- its kind of funny to watch now

It sounded like a cat sounds when getting into a fight only bigger and very hair raising. One of the guys down our road thinks we have a bigfoot living in the thousands of acres that used to be the old smelter. You never know.  I've seen bobcats, but never a cougar.  I don't want my dogs tore up but they could take on a bobcat. I'm not as good a shot as Glenn (and he wasn't home at the time) but would have to try. I'd feel terrible if I shot and killed one of the dogs by accident.
Your Wyandotte hen is lovely as they all are. great pictures of the fluffy butts.  The ones I got from you are really growing with the exception of the youngest.  She is very active, however.  I know there are two roos just by the way they walk and hold their heads.  The jury is still out on the others.

One more question.  Didn't you tellme that by feeding the medicated pig feed the eggs will still be fertile and hatchable as well as the eggs being edible?  I've been eating them and am ok. I just wanted to be sure.

Yes, it would be awful to shoot your dog fighting a big cat and not get the cat! We have had reports of cougars in our area and actually saw the photos of one killed a few miles from here by a farmer whose children ride horses where the cat was shot. It measured 9 feet from tip of nose to tip of tail! Now that's a BIG cat!
Yes on the medicated pig starter. Eggs will be fertile and edible. The antibiotic in the feed is Oxytetracycline. I take Tetracycline for my diverticulitis when it acts up.

it reaally makes a difference when u work w/them. We have 6 big dogs and all but one was a rescue. But fortunately they didn't kill as many chickens as I thought they would when they accidently got out. now the chickens can come in the yard w/ no problem, but it still makes me edgy. Glenn's old dog had to be put down months ago, but he could never be broke about the chickens so we had to do differently w/him. He was ok if we were out w/ him, but never trustworthy. He killed a few of my cats and my small lap dog when Glenn and I first were married. He did learn about the house cats, I have two left. What kind is the speckled chicken? Great pics.

That's scary. I think for the most part that they try to avoid human contact, but ther's always the exception. Thnks for answering my question. I thought that's what u

I just love catching up on posts late at night. You all are so interesting. And what an expression on Dottie's face when she got caught in the planter lol
I'm debating on several ways to be able to let my birds out of their fenced areas to wander around the back this summer. There's a fence around it all but not a secure chain link one. I know they'd sure love it and Nana, your's look so happy to be able to run around. I'm getting males into groups and have been pleasantly surprised at some of the roosters that accept each other as long as there's no girls to fight over. My 2 Gold Laced Cochin boys (that were free on craigslist!) are filling out really nice and are so beautiful. Sweet gentle temperaments, with people and other roosters, too. I find that the longer I have some of these birds the more attached I get to them.

The speckled hen was Dora, a Gold Lace- very special girl. No, we don't have cats because the dogs view them as prey- sure would help the rat and mouse situation around here though

I know Poco mentioned seeing cougars, or maybe her hubby. We do have bobcats, but they stay away due to the dogs

@muesky thanks for the info on crossbeak, i hope this little one doesn't get extreme- Cressy had very bad beak worst i've seen

Cochins are just awesome and the large fowl even more so! Sonny has convinced me ever the roos can be nice...LOL! He still has tender feet, no toenails, so it will be awhile to toughen them up?

@NanaKat Shasta is oblivious to the snow, and is Obrians favorite

Please except my apology.  I am so sorry, I wasn't scolding really.  I just got on a rant.  I see no reason a dog can't be tied when nescessary.  I've had to do that to mine a few hours when we 've had company.  They are all big and imposing so no one ever wants to come through the gate or in the house with them lose.  I just meant 24/7 and really wasn't directing it at u. (There's a beautiful dog across the rd from us that is always tied up, no matter the weather and I had never seen anyone do anything with him but feed him and it makes me cry.  We have a bobcat around here and he wouldn't stand a chance. so I was venting at them really.) I'll go back and read my post because it didn't think I scolded, but since u wanted help and I just vented I can see where u are coming from. I'm a kind person, really.  Just an annoying one.:barnie  I can't stand to see anything hurt, human or animal.  Except the bloomin predators and I feel bad for them because they are trying to stay alive too.  Just find something elses beside my animals or anyone elses.     Sometimes I am not very articulate in the way I put things and certainly don't have the grace and skills of communication as so many have on here. Please forgive me, I wan't scolding:oops:   I HAVE HAD MY FEELINGS HURT SO MANY TIMES BY NOT BEING UNDERSTOOD SO i KNOW HOW U FEEL..  I am one of those sometimes activist on spaying and nuetering, because of so many unwanted animals out there.  Cats go feral, become predators to stay alive and it's not their fault.  I wish u all the luck with your dog.  Nana Kat and others seem to know a lot about them.  I'm just lucky because mine hasn't done that, and she is old and very playful.  Some of our other dogs have killed some of our chickens at first, but when they got to know them as part of the pack, they never bother them.  Good luck, and never let anyone make u feel bad.  Thank you for pointing it out to me.  Ps I am a terrible speller.
Thanks

and I feel ya . I'm quite sensitive about the subject right now. I feel all my animals are my family, silly, and there is a problem in the family right now. Makes me all anxious.
