***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Quote: That was exactly my explanation to them. I was so not gonna just walk away; I was ticked. I try to have respect for my elders, people older than me. But the neighbors were sitting there blatantly telling me I'm cruel to butcher chickens. I spared them no details on how store-bought birds go.

Hey everybody! Been thinking of all you often, just can't find the time to make it to an auction or get on BYC. I am sure there are many new folks I have yet to meet.
Life here is starting to settle down. Josh is off to school & so house projects have slowed. Now we can craft & enjoy our hobbies once again. The girls have both been enjoying horses for the moment. Not sure what Taron is going to do in the spring. We lost almost our entire guinea flock in the cold. 10 died just last night. We have 4 remaining birds. As of now she says she is going to start again, but I who knows. I think with Josh away we can take a season off.
I was wondering if anyone else has lost guineas in with all this cold weather. If you haven't don't tell Taron, she is way upset. The guineas have spent 2 winters in the exact same set up with no issues. This winter is just not like the others.

Any talk of Poops yet???
Promise I will do my best to check in often, house projects have had priority over everything else.

Christina! How good to hear from you :) :)
I bought 5 Lavender keets last Oct/Nov at Blanchard and lost all of them one by one WWith-in a few wks. So I don't even have any to compare to. I do have 2 who have lost their toes to frostbite and 3 frostbitten combs. It's been tough trying to keep 50 1/2 grown chicks warm and I'm really pretty surprised not to have lost anybody to the cold. It's just been so much more frigid than I ever remember it being here.
Do you mean 4 birds total or 4 Guineas?
Come back soon!

I've not heard of them but those are some awesome looking eggs!

Nana, I meant to tell you those Wyandottes are just beautiful :-O I know you'll have great luck with your breeding projects.

I know when I saw those eggs I thought my those are almost to "good to be true" not meaning to offend if anyone knows these people, not saying they aren't real, that was just my first reaction to seeing those eggs.

! I wonder how much they will lighten throughout the laying season, but that is amazing!!!! @ $100 a dozen they had better be that dark!!!

She is down to 4 guineas. I know she had at least 3dz that were 1yr+ this fall. We didn't keep any we hatched since we were building the house & that was enough. None of the other birds have skipped a beat (only skipping the egg laying). Ducks & chickens don't mind the cold. Had a BCM running around with ice hanging off her legs & she never seems to notice. I have never had keets reach their full potential if they were hatched during the fall. They need LOTS of warmth to grow. This fall Taron gave all her eggs to a neighbor & she lost all the keets she hatched too.

Kass I recall hearing about that hatchery, but honestly I am so out of the chicken loop I don't even remember what I heard!

Has anyone dealt w/ Fitz farms here in OK?  ~~http://www.fitzfarmandpoultry.net/m...site&utm_source=sendgrid.com&utm_medium=email

I'm not asking for myself, an out of state friend asked me about them.  Specifically the marans eggs/chickens.

I've never dealt with them, but make sure your friend is buying for the egg color instead of SOP. Thats one thing we heard over and over at the Shawnee show where the Marans club was attending... you sacrifice SOP for egg quality.
