***OKIES in the BYC III ***

MJ it is good to be able to connect with chicken folks, hated getting so out of touch.

Nana we are all well. Alexis is an expert soaper now, at least for a 15yr old. She is starting to get interested in experimenting with colors.

Coral I am surprised to hear the birds are snuggling in the hay. DH told Taron to put a bunch of hay down for the guineas, but we all now guineas never agree with what we want them to do.
A while back I told Robin I would post pics of the 3 legged pup we ended up keeping, better late than never I guess. DH said we should prob rehome her to a city home, she tries so hard to hang with the big dogs. It is hard on her & sad to see her not able to run to the barn with the others. She doesn't want to be a house dog except to sleep at night.

It was beyond disgusting!!!!!!!!!!
What is more disgusting is reading through a manual for alternative curriculum published by the department of education and finding grammatical and spelling errors through out the book.. Nice....

The speckled hen was Dora, a Gold Lace- very special girl. No, we don't have cats because the dogs view them as prey- sure would help the rat and mouse situation around here though

I know Poco mentioned seeing cougars, or maybe her hubby. We do have bobcats, but they stay away due to the dogs

@muesky thanks for the info on crossbeak, i hope this little one doesn't get extreme- Cressy had very bad beak worst i've seen
Dachshunds make great mousers as well and if you get them young, raise them with chickens they are good for killing opossums and raccoons, to protect their chickens.

Found on Facebook
Yep.. That is about right...

I think the PETA hit the nail on the head. Some neighbors got onto us for butchering poultry (when I helped the neighbors butcher, my first ever time, too. Such a learning experience! :"D) they said it was cruel. Do they have any idea?
It is really sad how disconnected people are from their food sources..

Hey everybody! Been thinking of all you often, just can't find the time to make it to an auction or get on BYC. I am sure there are many new folks I have yet to meet.
Life here is starting to settle down. Josh is off to school & so house projects have slowed. Now we can craft & enjoy our hobbies once again. The girls have both been enjoying horses for the moment. Not sure what Taron is going to do in the spring. We lost almost our entire guinea flock in the cold. 10 died just last night. We have 4 remaining birds. As of now she says she is going to start again, but I who knows. I think with Josh away we can take a season off.
I was wondering if anyone else has lost guineas in with all this cold weather. If you haven't don't tell Taron, she is way upset. The guineas have spent 2 winters in the exact same set up with no issues. This winter is just not like the others.

Any talk of Poops yet???
Promise I will do my best to check in often, house projects have had priority over everything else.
Hi Christina!!! Glad to see you posting again..
As for winters, the last two have been fairly mild comparatively with what is the norm for Oklahoma.. Not sure if you watch or read Game of Thrones but "Winter is coming"...

It did say at their darkest

! I wonder how much they will lighten throughout the laying season, but that is amazing!!!! @ $100 a dozen they had better be that dark!!!
Nope, just is not going to happen.. Not sure I would pay that much money for a dozen eggs even if I did win the lottery unless they were gold eggs.. hehehe!

I added more straw to the pens. Some of the hens decided it would be warmer in a straw igloo, so they burrowed into a fluffy pile. Curious to know what was so special in that spot, a nosey cockerel dug them up. He was scolded by the hens but didn't seem to understand why.

I lost one bird to the cold: Wickett, my silkie rooster. Wickett usually roosts in the barn with a group of capons. He changed his sleeping quarters last week, choosing to roost with some young pullets in a coop that's outside the barn. He did fine for two nights, but the third night must have been too cold for him. When I let the pullets out, they flew from the coop to the wheelbarrow in front of the barn, and from there they hopped down and walked into the barn to visit and have breakfast. Wickett stayed on the roost. I called to him, but he didn't come out. He had passed away on the roost, head under one wing. If I hadn't taken him down of the roost, I wouldn't have known that I'd lost him. He was a good roo, and I'm going to miss that cantankerous little guy.

We'd be the latest in chicken gangs.... you know, going around, influencing and enabling....
Awwww the ranks are growing... Soon The World!!!! Bwwhahahaha!!!

she is a beauty though!!

Coral, sorry about wickett- haven't lost any yet- guineas i worry about- they sleep on the porch, and have a little 3 sided shed on the porch to sleep in, which they have started using- we are leaving the light on hoping it helps a little- they won't go in the coop- i have been feeding everyone hot oatmeal with cayenne in it, need to try that with the guineas.

@NanaKat Shasta hasn't' missed laying at all, very consistant, very impressed with her!

Sonny is doing well one foot is healed now, the other has a way to go, but he has lost all toenails now, he is a hefty guy though, only giving him fermented feed, can i say spoiled?

Dusti...that would make a great T-shirt!

Robyn...Shasta looks great! Is she still laying?

Okay a few more pictures. I took photos of my Wyandotte cock birds to show Carl to advise me on pens. With his help, pens will be set as soon as the weather settles. Blue Birchen, Black Birchen and Blue Columbian are not color varieties yet recognized by the American Poultry Association so they are considered project pens. But the Columbian, Blue, Black and White are recognized colors.
Can you tell I really like Wyandotte?

The Blue Birchen cock will go over Black Birchen hens to make both Blue and Black Birchen offspring. His yellow legs should help clean up the legs on the offspring.

This Blue Columbian has great type (shape, color comb, leg) and will go over Columbian hens to make Blue Columbian and Columbian offspring.

Of these three Black Birchen, the Cock on the back right will be selected to go over Black and Blue hens out of my original Columbian cock to produce Black and Blue females to go under the Blue Birchen cock in late fall or next spring

This Columbian Cock will go in a pen over any of Beau's daughters, be they Black, Columbian, BCW or Blue. He has great type, a really nice comb and tail....a gentle giant with the girls too.

Here is Beau, the original cock Columbian Wyandotte with a few of the original hens and some of his daughters. The pristine white/is a daughter....she is gorgeous! The bantam Cochin is one of two being raised by a Wyandotte hen.
I got confused trying to keep up, I don't know how u do.
That was exactly my explanation to them. I was so not gonna just walk away; I was ticked. I try to have respect for my elders, people older than me. But the neighbors were sitting there blatantly telling me I'm cruel to butcher chickens. I spared them no details on how store-bought birds go.

Good for you

Thanks

and I feel ya . I'm quite sensitive about the subject right now. I feel all my animals are my family, silly, and there is a problem in the family right now. Makes me all anxious.

I think we all do. Sorry about the misunderstanding again. Oh no, another worry wart. Your on the right threadLOL seriously
Friggen Kevin Bacon plus 3 degrees in air temp here this morning....I don't even want to say what the wind chill is.... neg Kevin Bacon minus even more... Yikes!
Will someone let me in on the Kevin Bacon joke, please. I'm a little dense at times.

It didn't quote w/ your pic in it, but I thought the pic was funny.

I didn't get the Kevin Bacon joke either??

Armbands are a great idea. We could write our names in big black letters on them.

Christina, that dog is way cool looking, she looks like an Anatolian/Pyrenees mix. I've had upwards of 14 dogs for the past 15 yrs and am almost down to 8 now. The youngest are the 2 Golden brothers, 8 yrs old. (I don't count my 8 mo old Chihuahua). I'm so dang ready to have only the little Chihuahua and NO other dogs.

It's incredibly hard to lose special ones. There's a couple now that I lost over a year ago that I still think of when I feed those yards of birds. It makes me feel better to say a little hello to them under my breath when I go into those yards. I hope all our lost chickens live together somewhere and know how special they were.
