***OKIES in the BYC III ***

have all sorts of plans to make little coops like yours @TRUE5
by the way, make sure hubby only shoots to scare the hawk off, against the law to kill them- wondering if one of those fake owls would help too?

State statute allows you to kill a hawk if it is killing your poultry.
Citation: OK ST T.29 5-410
Summary:
"Oklahoma law prohibits the knowing and willful killing or molestation of hawks, falcons, owls, or eagles or their nests, eggs, or young. the only exceptions to this prohibition are the taking of a hawk or owl in the act of destroying domestic birds or fowl, or the use of hawks! owls, falcons, or eagles by licensed falconers."

Owls can destroy a flock of chickens. If they can fly in under the the shed and get on the roost, they'll push the hens off and kill them one after another.
I like the idea of the laser sight.
i heard that if guinea fowl sleep in tree owls will land next them and then kill them also.

i walked out on my front porch yesterday and saw a hawk flying then my dog noticed he started barking and ran under neath it barking till he came to the fence and and to stop lol

Checked the eggs that did not hatch on the 16th.
Three Buckeye were fully developed but never internally pipped. One was upside down. One Delaware quit at lockdown and one Wyandotte never externally pipped.
Had one chick hatch leaving the yolk in the eggs shell...never happened before...but it quickly expired.

Noticed the Little Giant I'm using as a hatcher needs to be retired as it is not holding temp effectively even with all my adjustments. May have to explore turning it into a brooder.

@true I'm so glad your letting me have the little boy back. Sometime this morning between glancing out the window at 6 am and doing chores at 9 am my extension cord to my brooder got loosened. Lost 16 chicks, mainly isbars but also a cream legbar pair I had tagged to keep, one black copper, and one barnevelder. :( at least I didn't lose any chicks marked for other people. Makes me sick. I usually check brooders first but didn't today.

Heard one to the south of the house this morning. If they are spotted, they won't be safe. Got to be extra careful now, have a hen sitting on eggs and due to hatch next week.

I had no idea! We live VERY rural so I never worried about it...but next time the hubby is belly crawling across the lawn to the coop to try to snipe a chicken hawk I will politely inform him that it is legal to kill them if they are after our chickens. How funny. His grandma and grandpa are always on his case not to shoot them because it is illegal too. Good Information!!
