***OKIES in the BYC III ***

LOVE her! She seems to be doing really well with the transition to our home and is in a pen by herself. She gets to stay out during the day until dusk. She is still very croupy and you can hear it in her breathing. I have given her Tylan for 3 days now and it doesn't seem to be helping. Is there anything else I should do that might help? Any other meds I should try? I will be going the full 7 days with Tylan injected. I don't think she is losing weight but don't know because we have only had her since Friday. I could shoot my husband for spending as much as he did for her but I still adore her. In that pic you don't see her bare butt lol. I checked again and I think I might dust her just incase it is from mites and I'm just not seeing them. She's a big girl and weighs a bunch! Such a sweet heart! Boy oh boy, if she doesn't get well though I will be permanently banned from auctions by my husband.

What a beauty!

I have had constant problems w/ shrink wrapping, no matter if I open or not, or have few or many eggs. By far the majority of my successfully hatched chicks have been helped by me and shrink wrapped. After learning on the first 2 I have never lost a shrink wrapped chick b/c of helping it, and I have helped probably over 40 now. This time I have turned the temp down 1 degree hoping that will help my shrink wrap problem.

I don't open until I know I have a shrink wrap problem, then I go into the bathroom turn on the heater and the hot water, get it all hot and steamy and work on the chicks but only open the bator for seconds at a time. Get one egg out at a time and help then return, and if I am getting eggs out to help I take dried fluffed chicks out at the same time. I use q-tips and warm water.

Well darn. Love my incubator but I was hoping there was something I could do to help out with the shrinkwrapping. Not looking forward to assisting hatches all the time but I will do what I must. I'm looking for leghorn chicks or hatching eggs if anyone knows anyone local. If not I'm headed to ebay next.
I think so, but you could probably add a 3rd time easily, 1 morning, 2 when you get home from work, 3 right before bed.

Yup Yup! I have heard that you want to make sure you turn it an odd number of times so they don't sit the same way overnight. The Brinsea is hexagon shaped so it's very easy to turn.

Such good news! Will it be hard to catch the Spalding Pied? I have witnessed a couple of epic Peacock chases.

Well I really thought it would be. You should have seen us catching the other peafowl when the wind blew their building over!! They haven't been handled much at all and were bought 2yrs old and up and wild as they come when I bought them. It was very interesting herding each one into a closed barn and trapping them in a corner and praying they didn't jump and fly over your head just to repeat the process, but we eventually caught them all even though we got beat by their 6 foot wingspan many times. They are very strong!!

Luckily the Pied is my favorite so he gets handled quite regularly and all I had to do was open the door to the pen and he walked right in there to get back to his ladies. Can't wait for pied chicks in a few months. :)

lost my little knitting buddy tonite- Licorice, also known as the broody from you know where...! Dang, she had crackling breathing, weight loss, i'm really tired of losing these guys- but she had a full life and raised 4 clutches- a sweet girl unless she was a mama, then you had to be real careful

That's awful. I'm so sorry for your loss.

I went in to my local feed store last week in Coweta and although they didn't have leghorns they were willing to order them for me as long as I ordered at least 5. I figure I can sell any I have left when they get to point of lay. Might ask your feed store. The smaller local ones will be more likely to do it than the big chain feed stores.

The incubator should have some plugs you can take out that will let out the humidity. If not open it for a bit, unless you have eggs in it already.

If your DH is freaking out about the chickens just tell him that 20 chickens is small time. I have well over 60 bird on my place.

Darling is so beautiful. I really like her coloring.. Do you have a roo to go with her? If not I could probably hook you up with one. :) I am hopefully going to get some more tomorrow and I will have an extra roo I do not need. Send me a PM if you are interested.
Lol! When we started he set "rules". I think I broke every one of them. It was, only 8 hens one roo. No babies, no incubating, only hens that were already laying. Basic breeds because the more rare the more expensive and we only need basic good egg layers. So here I am! Incubating, with 20+ chicks and a few juveniles, one hen that is laying right now (Darling is egg laying age but still hasn't layed yet.), my breeds include some rare breeds and heritage. When all my chicks are grown and laying the number in the coop will be 20+. Oh, and no more than 8 hens 1 roo because he was NOT going to build another coop! Well, we just got more material for another coop.

I appreciate the offer but I don't think I will be breeding. I try to keep my number of boys down to two. It's hard because I know she would give some pretty babies!

Exactly. :)

My husband would think he surely lost his way home if he got here and only saw 20 chickens, I had twice that before I was even a week into this hobby

Somebody on here mentioned using a clothes steamer every time they opened the bator to give them a little puff of steam.
