Thundering here, too. So weird to see snow and thunder at the same time. We were outside earlier feeding grain soaked in super hot water. They loved it. I kept everyone locked up from last night, they don't need to be out in this crud. I've got one of those pop-out canvas exercise pens that's really coming in handy for Serama Playtime.
I bet the bantams are perfectly cozy in their tractor!
This hen I kept back is way too bossy with other girls, she's the tiniest one and bows up at other girls just daring them to take her on lol. She pecks them on the head whether they submit or not. She's the one who was getting picked on so bad by the male you're holding now. Maybe she liked him picking on her!
I've got these guys at the end of the loft, our bedroom's up there also. I'm glad it's pitch black up there in the mornings or there'd be an awful lot of crowing at 5 AM.

ok, one of the seramas has this on his eye, at first i thought a cyst on the lower lid, suggestions on treating?

I wonder if it is something respiratory based on the bubbling going on. Although - that could just be an indication of a lot of gunk in the eye - maybe air comes out of the sinuses into the eyes normally and we just don't see it.

For those experiencing trouble with respiratory distress (in the birds), you might consider getting a bag of medicated pig starter. This is a small pellet, and is medicated very well to prevent respiratory problems in piglets. You can get this feed in several forms and medications, chlortetracycline, Tylan (Tylosin), Gallymiacin, Denegard and others. I have used this and find it very easy to keep them on the feed for two weeks this will also boost the other birds nearby to prevent them from getting the problems as well.
You can also use the pig feed with, fenbatazole, wormer in it for the birds, that will get all worms including tape worms. Just remember when worming you have to follow up and worm them again in 7-10 days. For best results hit them three times.

Hey, Carl! Good to see you on today. I switched out Beau for a young CW cock because Beau is still shooting blanks. Will condition him and work with him later in the spring. The Brown Reds are laying and so far 100% fertility.

@Cjarvis and @NanaKat how much are you paying for the OTC feed in Shawnee? Thanks for the tip about the wormer feed. I was just looking at that in Tractor Supply. The CTC/denegard feed is $30 for 50 pound bag

Dusti, If I remember correctly the Oxytetracycline pig starter was $17.50 a bag last year. Haven't bought any this year so not sure if it has gone up any.


I have 35 eggs going into the hatcher this evening...and 12 going under two hens. One Cochin pen has had low fertility so I will trim their bums today too. One of those hens is broody and will be getting eggs. All babies are doing great...knock on wood.
Two cows are in labor this morning...hope they pop and calves get full of milk before the cold really sets in...BRRR out there. Had one born yesterday...popped up a red calf out of an Angus bull...must be some limosin in there somewhere. He was supposed to be full Angus. If we get any more red calves, he goes to the auction.
Going out to clean all the water containers and put in fresh water with oxine....need to have good water during the freeze since I add hot water on top of the ice.
how much oxine per water do you put in for drinking? On the red calf - there are red angus...any possibility of that being the mix? The potential calves we went out to check were still tucked safely into their warm mama tummies. How are your laboring mamas'?

@Cjarvis , was this used in conjunction with other antibiotics? I have some birds on cephalin and ciproflexin. I also have some that I was planning on administering Tylan to, as the other stuff did not clear it for them.



Tell you - I have at least 11 sick birds, and last night in the coop - it seemed as though all I heard was coughing and unhappy breathing. I think my only HEALTHY birds are the chicks in the brooder. I have a few trios of healthy show birds, but with the weather like it is, there is no where to put them where they aren't exposed to sick birds. l

I have not used the Tylan yet. The 'sick' (kennel) birds have been on the pig food for 2 days. I have some birds that are responding to the cipro/ceph combo - but others not so much.

I am thinking, that at the least, I should switch my entire coop to the pig feed? That will be expensive.... but this individual treatment stuff and 'isolation' .... I have no more kennels, no more heat sources, no more porch and no more ... well, you know....getting closer to some kind of limit.

On a cheery note - the paint and black silkies that are the kid's 4-H project did quite well at our livestock show and bonus auction yesterday - as did one of our longhorn heifers. .... oh yes, which started coughing and runny nosing yesterday too - hope it is the weather - but if not still requires a lot less effort to treat.. 'sigh'

Off to check on a very prego cow.... will deal with chickens later. Thanks for any help and input!

Looks like more than just a cyst. Looks like he has some respiratory stuff going on based on the bubbling I see in it's eye.

Do you just feed it consistently or mix it with other feed? If I can find a feed with denegard then I would rather get it than try to add the med in water... Thanks for the tip! I will try the feed store here in my town. Hope they have it! I know someone who actually will feed his entire flock once a month "just incase". Would this be beneficial or would it make them build up a resistance to the medication? Anyone know?


That sounds like fun! I took my daughters to the bantam show in Pryor and thought I could find a Silkie pullet for my oldest. All the silkies available were sold so I found out you have to get there early.

Yes, discharge from the eye will usually be bubbly. Not so much from the nose. And she still makes a mucus sounding cough. I wont name names or say anything but someone I know in Oklahoma has just had an outbreak of a deadly respiratory disease in their flock (ILT). Killed one bird that I know of but they all might end up being ordered to be destroyed by the state. So so so sad. But since that is here in Oklahoma and I wont say how far from my own town, I will say that it makes me aware that it is out there and could have been transferred from another flock. So with my cochin having symptoms as this disease it makes me very careful on quarantine. I know it could not be ILT so I'm not going to jump to conclusions I just want you all to know that it is out there in this state and this person doesn't know how the flock got it seeing they never bring any other chickens in. This person thinks that maybe it was on their clothes or could have been from a feed sack. It's really a bad ordeal for this person and I feel SO bad for what they are having to deal with. My prayers go out to them.

It may be a good idea to treat everyone with the medicated pig feed. Only have the medicated feed available so they do not have any choice but to eat it.

This is Supt. "name deleted" once again with another summer weather update. The weather in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil will be about 90 degrees and sunny for the next few days. Oh, I am sorry, I must have been daydreaming. Therefore, due to the lack of 90 degree sunny days that we are currently experiencing here in Oklahoma, we will be closing school and all activities for Monday, March 3. Also as an FYI, this will be our last snow day built into the schedule. If we should have to miss any more days after Monday, those days will have to be made up. Sorry, but it is what it is. Be safe in the not so summer like weather.
